What does BTU stand for? Do you think a 8,000Btu window unit would cool the room?

BTU stands for British Thermal Units. For your square footage, you should not go smaller than 6000 BTU. Go a little bigger (e.g. 7500-8000) to be on the safe side, especially if it is the only air conditioner in the house, or if you are on another floor other than ground floor (remember, heat rises) or directly below the roof.

One that can cool 264 sq. ft

British Thermal Unit (A measurement of heat, like a calorie)

8k might do it, if it's on the 2nd floor with a flat roof, it might be a struggle
