I have recently taken over an allotment that has a patch (1m x 2m) of raspberry canes. The plot has been unused for 18 months. The canes are about 3 to 4 feet tall, and tangled into each other. Most of the canes are bare but a few have some new leaves on them. What can I do to bring them back? Should I cut them right back or should I leave them as they are?

Cut them all the way back and next year you'll have a crop you won't believe! The problem with raspberries are they travel like crazy and multiply like rabbits! Be sure that you really want them or have time to keep them 'in line' otherwise it might be easier to just dig them out when you have them cut back. They're wonderful eating though!

Cut back the woody stems amd these will make your crop for next year.Leave the green ones as these will be this years crop.Just repeat this process every year. Try to keep them in a line and stretch some thick wire across to give them support, then they won't get tangled.

Good luck, they are well worth the effort/

Hi Digger.

Sassy got most of it already, but if you want more info' try:
http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/fruit_veg_mini_project_january_2_raspberry.asp

They're well worth the effort, but keep the birds off them and keep them well mulched and given a potash feed in the Spring.

A pole each end of the row with some strong twine or wire between them will give you something to tie them to. Anyway most of this is in the article in the link.

Hope you have loads of fruit!

Raspberries usually just keep growing. The red ones are a little easier to manage, if they are black berries you will get a good bunch of them.
