the bed will be planted with Calif. natives and Mediterranean plants;I visualize two streams converging into a dry"pond. The streams will be approximately 20-to-30 ft. long and the pond area is roughly 10' in diameter. Existing tree roots will impede digging very deeply.

Sorry...put this in the wrong category the first time...

OK you HVAC guys, give it to me straight. My really nice brand new (installed last Fall) Carrier boiler has water coming about 1/3 of the way up the side because my basement flooded. There is a metal piece off the side that I would imagine is some kind of motor or something, and the water is on it as well....covering about half of it. Is my $5000 investment now down the tubes? Or will it recover? My OLD boiler got flooded a couple of times and still worked ok, but things made way back then seem to have been a little more resilient than a lot of today's products.

BTW...I tried to get them to install this one on a concrete slab, but they were only able to raise it about 3 inches off the floor due to clearance & safety concerns. So I really didn't have any choice where to put it.

I live in SE michigan, zone 5, a relatively cold climate. I have a damp back yard with clay soil. I have put up cherry trees and arbor vitaes to try to make a screen.
The cherries died, and the arborvitaes look like they are about to die as well.
How about bamboo?

Is there any "scent-free" way to get rid of skunks? They come into our yard every night and dig up the ground looking for food...and they leave their lovely aroma behind! (ha ha) The other morning around 5:30 a.m., when my husband was going out the door to go to work, we saw not one, but TWO skunks, digging away in the yard. Of course if we try to "scare" them away, they'll spray...is there any other way to keep them away? Thanks!
