Soak them in a solution of vinegar and water. Vinegar works very well on deposits left by hard water.

When you wash them--wash in very hot water and dish soap (like you normally would and then rinse them in a combo of white vinegar and hot water. About a cup of vinegar to a gallon or so of water.
This works brilliantly. If you dry them immediately the results will be NO water spots.

Once water has stained your ceiling, the only way to remove the stains is to replace the damaged area. Covering the stain is MUCH easier.
