I live in SE michigan, zone 5, a relatively cold climate. I have a damp back yard with clay soil. I have put up cherry trees and arbor vitaes to try to make a screen.
The cherries died, and the arborvitaes look like they are about to die as well.
How about bamboo?

It sound as if its not what you are planting but the conditions in which you expect the plants to grow. I don't how The North of England compares with SE Michigan. but unless you give plants some positive conditions to grow in most will wither and die. Try to improve the soil, by the addition of good compost and look through web-sites like the Royal Horticutural Society's to find plants and trees that will thrive in that position.

There are additionally 2 flowers that still proceed to exist Antarctic soil (very small angiosperm grassy variety flowers in specific aspects). it quite is not basically the temperature (closer the sea the hotter it is) yet additionally for flowers its the quantity of sunshine (bear in mind it is going to likely be close to dark for many of the time in wintry climate in greenland). flowers additionally improve lots extra slowly in chilly areas and then have speedy classes of advance for reproducing, yet they have developed this over a protracted volume of time. flowers that have been on greenland while it replaced into in warmer classes and in warmer aspects could have died out or developed to proceed to exist as circumstances replaced.
