I have a large allotment and am plagued by slugs. What is the most cost effective way of controling the little darlings? Someone suggested using salt, but wouldn't that harm the plants? And how would I apply it?

Whenever it rains, my sidewalk (in the back of my house) is flooded with water. I have dug a trench along side the sidewalk and down the side of the garage (The backyard slopes) so that the water runs downhill. What can I do to make the trenches more than just dirt? Any edging or other landscaping ideas?

Thanks

Several years ago I purchased eight RED Crape Myrtles and planted them. The first year they were too small to bloom. Last year all bloomed this brite red. The color was beautiful. This year three are blooming a brite pink/red color. The other five are brite red. Can anyone explain why this is happening and what I can do to make them all bloom red next year? Thanks for your help !

I have an old edison light bulb. It is mounted in a wooden base with screw down wire connecters on each side of base. wires are sealed in wax. This does not appear to be the 50 year commerative that was made just before the great depression. These bulbs had a metal tag mounted to the base. This base has no tag and no holes where the tag might have been. Any idea of value or how to tell if it's authenic.

Serious answers only, please...
Still trying to identify if these are carpenter ants or not, they are big and black, that's for sure. (Will try to get agriculture extension to id on Monday.) We can't seem to locate a "trail" of where they are coming from, rather they are scattered about individually. The one exception was when they took over our trash bag a week ago (don't know WHAT they found in there; I was throwing away PAPERS, for gosh sakes!). They are in kitchen and bathroom areas only, but really getting to my dear 91 year old Dad, who is talking about calling in exterminator, which I would like to avoid. Dad doesn't complain about much, so I know this is bad for him. So far have tried: ant traps, vinegar, cayenne pepper, and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Am nervous about using the boric acid; seems too much like poison. Is borax related to boric acid? That would seem safer, if as effective.
