When dealing with bees, any bees, you must do your elimination at night. Nightime they are inside their nests resting or sleeping and are not that active.
Go to Wal-Mart and get yourself a good Hornet's Spray. Raid is always a good choice or something very close to it. Follow the directions on the can as to how far to spray it and when. Your best bet is to spray the entrance hole and spray the entire nest on the outside, until dripping wet. By morning, the bees should be dead and then you can get rid of the nest safely off of the tree. The spray shouldn't harm your tree if you spray just the nest and the spray shouldn't harm your yard either.
I live in the country and I have many years of experience with bees and what they can do and can't do. As far as the gasoline part that your friend told you, you may want to do that after the nest is down from the tree. Place the nest in a metal bucket or metal container & pour gasoline on it and burn it. Hopefully then you won't have any more problems with the hornets this year.
Good luck and enjoy your summer!

I would use a wasp and hornet spray to get rid of them.,but do it at night when all the hornets are in the nest, have one person hold a flashlight so you can see the nest to spray it.do be care full because there are at least 2 openings in nest with a sentry posted, then soak the nest with the wasp and hornet spray,(full can will last only about 20-30 seconds)

Call an exterminator to spray the nest, or get several cans of spectracide and spray it at night. This will make sure that the nest is full and will minimize your chances of getting stung. Remove the nest after a day to make sure all of the hornets get a dose of the poison. Don't use gas, that will go right to your watershed and fruit trees.

In the evening when the sun is going down take a large plastic bag and tie over the branch If you have a sprayer for insects take rod part of sprayer( anywhere ) you may even poke a hole in bag to spray. Industrial strength hornet solution is what you need for the sprayer.

My parents had a big one outside their house. In the local paper was advertising for someone who would come get them for free. They called him but he didn't end up wanting it, but he still took care of it for free. Late evening after they all came home he sprayed the heck out of it with wasp/hornet spray, then smacked it down and bagged it.
They've had other small ones where a neighbor would pretty much do the same thing for them. Good luck! If in doubt, call for help.

1. ignore the hornets, they do not eat much.
I believe they do eat other insects and are therefore beneficial.
Enjoy them, study them, learn more about them.
Use them for a school project.
2. Spray it with some nasty household cleaning product, i.e. fantastic or such.
The smell of it will disorient them and you can take down the nest, or repeat spraying until they give up.

hornets die if sprayed on with kerosene (paraffin). You can try to burn some smoky thing like leaves under the nest, that would drive the hornets away, but do this at night.
