there is a smalish (diameter) hole in our garden that is about 20 inches deep and we think it might curve at where we thought the bottom was so is probably deeper. what could have made it (we live in england)

In England, I don't know. If you were in Ohio, USA, the answer would be easy......crawdads. Also known as crayfish. I've seen them burrow down 5 feet or more.

Look around the hole and see how the land looks.
Mole can dig just under the grass root. You can
see the raised earth where they've been.

could be a mouse i have one in my flower garden and i have seen it come up to the bird feeder that is located next to it
