They stop eating?

Seriously, septic tanks are usually full. They need to be in order to drain into the drain field. You basically have three layers in your septic tank, scum (the top), liquid (the middle), and sludge (the bottom). Your tank probably is comprised of two compartments. The first compartment is where everything comes in, and as it gets broken down it moves into the second compartment, from the liquid layer. This leads out into your drainfield, which is compossed of drain pipes and different layers of gravel, rock etc.

What happens is there is anaerobic (that means without air) bacteria that is breaking down the fecal matter and other oddities in the tank, which then lets it move out into the field, which is broken down more by the bacteria in the drain field. Eventually it is absorbed into the ground, hopefully pollutant free, and the environment is safe.

Depending on your need or rules imposed by your local Health Department, you may have to have it pumped every 2 to whatever years. This isn't because the tank is full, it's basically like giving your septic system a break from all the hard work it has to do. Flushing it out and letting it start over fresh and clean.

Septic tanks have to be pumped out regularly. This can be as regular as yearly, or depending on usage, every two years. It is much better to have it pumped out before it backs up. I'm not sure of the cost, but it is cheaper than trying to repair the damage once is has backed up.

They need to be pumped. If you don't pump them then they stop collecting waste effectively..

this means that all the stuff that is in your septic tank...backs up into your house through the plumbing anytime someone uses a shower or the toilet.
Ive been told its not pleasant to clean up.

You have to call the municipality then. They come with a lorry called a honeysucker and then they suck everything out of the septic tank with a half foot thick pipe.

If your septic tank is full then you will need new drain lines. You can have it pumped but, without new drain lines it will refill very quickly. Been there, done that.

they saturate the soil covering them and pool into the yard, you need to have them pumped at that point.

usually they never over flow, so long as they were the correct size for the house and the correct system for the soil. Always use ridex once a month, or flush a couple packets of baking yeast down the toilet.

If its overflowing a lot you need to have it checked.
