Why not? If it is porous so air and water can go through it, go ahead

Depends on what weeds, but if the ground is clear of weeds first then place the rug over it should prevent further growth.

This would not be advisable as the rain water would mostly run off of the rug and not get to the trees.

i have seen people do that, you can do that too, it harmless but make sure your evergreen not grow through bottom of the container into the rug, you may have hard time to cut the roots of to move them.

I haven't heard of that one. What I do is lift up the grass in squares around the evergreens and lay plastic and put the squares back in place.
