I am working on a news feature about a recent study where scientists explored why some people who suffer from major depression can’t seem to shake loose of their symptoms, falling into despair without just cause over and over again. These researchers believe they know why. They recently found evidence to suggest that depression is greatly influenced by a basic pattern of gene inheritance that alters the structural make-up of the brain.

what is it called when someone is pathologically afraid to be left alone? i dont just mean being left without company for a few minutes... not that extreme. i mean when someone has lost both parents, a brother and many friends (all died or abandoned them) and as a result, they live with the fear that ppl they hold dear will eventually abandon them or die. so a person with this fear therefore consciously avoids getting too attached to someone, coz they're scared they'll lose them.

someone told me this is called "monahofobia" is this valid?

please...only serious answers.
thanx

I was diagnosised with bipolar when I was 15, but the medication made me feel empty and void of all emotion. I quit taking the medication and since then have been fighting an on-going battle to maintain my life without medication. I feel like it was been a lost cause, and I have wasted my time trying to be normal with this disease. I don't know what I can do to regain my life.

I took Lexapro once last week I did not like how it made me feel so I stopped. Should I be worried about withdrawal side effects after one 5MG pills? I have been feeling chills and I'm wondering if it could be related. I took Celexa 6 years ago for two months and after I stoppped I felt sick for awhile.

I know that antidepressants affect everyone differently, but I'd like to get some opinions anyway. I've taken Zoloft, Wellbutrin, and Effexor. Zoloft was AWFUL (severe weight gain, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction, and an overall zombie-like feeling). I'm allergic to both Wellbutrin and Effexor (which is unfortunate, since I really liked Wellbutrin for the 2 weeks I was able to take it).

I've had food issues for years and have been diagnosed with bulimia, which is why I really can't take anything that's going to make me want to stuff my face constantly (like Zoloft did). I don't think I need to explain why I want something with a low incidence of sexual side effects =^P

I have talked to my doctor about this on several occasions, but doctors seem to think side effects are more rare than they truly are.

Is there ANY antidepressant out there that won't make me fat and destroy my sex life? Has anyone had any good experiences?

I would really appreciate some input. Thanks! =^)

How can one concentrate and keep mind blank and undisturbed for a couple minutes during the meditation despite of the external environmental disturbances. As it seems hard to keep a spontaneous wandering mind at rest. Plz suggest tips.

I met this woman, we have dated, she runs hot and cold. Drives me nuts (and her too, I assume) so I have been trying to understand the situation. She has only shared very brief insights into her past, a few bad relationships, and somewhere along the way some counselling that she never stuck with (but don't know what for, none of my business, I suppose). Anyways, I have done some leg work of my own and am now wondering if she might not have a borderline personality disorder. I have done a little reading on the matter and the similarities are scarily stark. Does anyone have insight into what it looks like in real life, including relationships and are there any suggestions for me dealing with myself in context to this potential situation? I am lost and scared.

If someone is unable to zone out any conversations and noises that are happening around them, if they don't want to pay attention to the conversations or sounds, etc but can't stop.
If someone has symptoms of everything just being too "Loud" and sometimes on medicines they feel things are "quiet" and they don't have to focus on or pay attention to the conversations, and sounds.
If the conversations and sounds they hear are actual conversations and sounds verified by friends and other people and not hallucinations.
If it really really bothers them that they can not make their mind stop paying attention especially when they want to do something else or focus on something else.
Is there a name for those symptoms? or is there a name for the condition they are suffering with?

I have dealt with panic disorder since I was 13, I am now 22 and it is ruining my life!!! I have recently quit my job and moved to my mothers house in the hills to start fresh and try to get over this but I cant seem to do it!!! I am too afraid to drive out here, I dont drive freeways as it is, but now I cant drive at all. I have two toddlers, and i need to get over this before they start going to school! I am a single parent so i would have no one else to take them! I am even afraid to walk to the park!!! What is wrong with me? Paxil makes me too tired to take care of the kids I've tried it and I get too grouchy with them. Anyone have suggestions ( nice ones please )? I'm not crazy I'm just afraid, and I dont want to keep avoiding it and become an agoraphobiac!

I am 24 and met a woman at work about a year ago who was 35, bipolar divorced with 3 kids. I liked her a lot and thought she was a very interesting woman, we went out and had lunches together and she told me all about this guy she was seeing who was slightly older and it was all secret because he was living with his girlfriend and had been for 3 years.

As the relationship progressed I got used to her odd behaviour and found it quite quirky, I also met the kids. Until something happened recently, she started sleeping with random men she had met at nightclubs and having unprotected sex, also her ex husband came back to live with her for a short while. I guess my morals were called into question and I couldn't believe how this woman could be so carefree and I didn't agree with it. Since then we have lost contact but i miss her tons, now i wonder if i'm more interested in the illness than the actual person, if so this is not healthy is it?

My father used to be an alcoholic. He got sick and quit over 7 yrs ago. The doc gave him hydroxyzine for alcohol withdrawals & anxiety. 5 months ago he though he didn't need it any more and now he has severe anxiety & paranoia. His hearing became sensitive, he is scared to use his credit card, only drinks out of water bottles and checks them before he opens it, hardly sleeps, moans and whines. Up until 5 days ago he refused to take any medication b/c he was scared of the side effects. This has been so stressful for my mom, so I called the mental health crissis clinic and they came out to convince him to take his old med hydroxyzine. He took it and the next day he had a severe panic attack and I had to call 911 & the police to force him to the hospital. They did tests and didn't feel the need to keep him there in the mental health clinic. When we brought him home he was furious with us & said he would never forgive us. He stoped that, & is taking his meds, but I don't see any change yet.

Do maladaptive behaviours in autistic children increase with age (into adulthood). Does communciation difficulties increase or stay stagnant with age. Does isolation increase with age (social skills, empathy). Is there a regression, as the time passes, or the development of the child is stagnant (no growth).

its really irritating. everytime i have a big exam coming up, i never sleep well the night before the paper. i probably get about two hours sleep for nine hours of exam papers a day. i go to bed on time, but i cant sleep. i feel so tired when i am awake, but as soon as i hit the pillows, my head starts running with all the equations and the regular- what-if's . what can i do to make this stop?? it is ruining my performance on the exam papers!! and as soon as the exam finishes, i am able to sleep fine once again. this makes me very fustrated. i tried warm milk and butter toast, i tried listenint to soothing music, i tried counting sheep, i tried listening to the aircon. how do i turn my head off?? i also tried meditating in some yoga poses and concentrating on my breathing, but this makes me seem more awake as i am concentrating!! this sucks big time ppl! pls give me a better help than telling me to just relax, because clearly, i canttt! help pppl!! =)
