The best thing to do is get in the habit of being in bed when you want to fall asleep. Be in bed even if you mind is racing, it eventually realizes that it's time to sleep. And set your alarm for the time in the morning that you want your body to wake up. If you get up earlier without going back to sleep, your body gets tired earlier. Then you'l go to sleep earlier. It doesn't just happen but it really does work. If you give it time. Don't watch TV for at least 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep, read a book instead, or listen to music. To calm your mind, concentrate on your breathing and when other thoughts pop up push them aside in favor of your breathing. The first couple of days will be hard but your body adjusts pretty quickly. Just keep yourself in a pattern.

Are you getting enough exercise? The brain depends on the body to take care of it and works better when the body is in good shape.
Are you participating in things other than just studying? A break to your brain is a good thing.
Perhaps you are worrying about not studying enough? You might see if there is a campus group that can help you use more effective study habits and relieve some of the stress.
Fortunately the average college student operates pretty well on 6 or so hours of sleep. Not that the bag monster doesn't claim more whenever it gets a chance!

There are a lot of good suggestions but don't try the alcohol one because then you'll just be hungover and not rested!! Try Celestial Seasonings Extra - it has Valerian root in it or just get some Valerian Root in the herbal supplement section at your grocery store. Valerian is natural and it will relax you. Take a hot bath or shower before you take this and then read a book you like or just try some guided imagery - put yourself on a warm beach or on a train or someplace that would relax you. Maybe you just need to retrain your body to sleep the schedule that you want to sleep.
Good luck and sweet dreams

I had that same problem a couple months ago.
You have to slowy change you sleep schedule.
Start going to bed 10-15 min earlier every night and eventually you'll get down to 11-12 pm and as for waking up without an alarm clock...... I'd set it just to be safe.
Set it at 8-9 to get youself use to getting up early and do it every day. Pretty soon you'll be at a "normal" schedule.
Good Luck and Sleep Tight!

You need to find something to relax you. Take a shower at night and lay down around 10:30 or 11. Also, exercise earlier in the day will tire you out sooner and will also help you sleep better and be in a better mood when you wake up.

Work out during the day one day. Or go for a long run. Something to wear your body down. Do word puzzles or study hard, wear your brain out that day too. Then you should want to go to bed earlier after that day. Then maybe once you get up earlier the next morning, you will be tired by the time 11 rolls around that next night, and you can get into a routine.

I've had bad insomnia for a while and I have a few tips that work for me. I try to stop doing work about an hour or two before I plan to go to sleep. If my insomnia is really bad, I take a warm bath and/or drink a warm glass of milk.... It reeeaally helps to relax you. Another great, great thing is Sleepytime tea.... it's chamomile and helps to soothe and relax you and help you sleep. Good luck!

Try some relaxation techniques. Yoga or meditation - this really helps to calm the mind. Some soft music in the background and maybe some incense or a scented candle. If this is to "girly" for you; you could also try to reset your body's "alarm." No matter what time you fall asleep make yourself get up at 9:00am ~ No matter what! If you are able to do this for a few days your body will begin to get used to your new routine and it will become eaiser for you . IF you are getting up at 9 every morning your body & mind will become tired way before 2:30am. Which means eariler to bed, eariler to rise.

Drink less caffeine after about 3 p.m. Take a warm bath before bed and go to bed and read a book to relax. NOT a school book, but a book that you are interested in. Try it, it works for me.
