Years ago my friend borrowed some Stelazine (a related drug) from her boyfriend for menstrual cramps (?!?!). Needless to say it didn't help. Two days later she said, "I can't control my tongue. It keeps moving in my mouth. Does any drug do that?" I thought she meant street drugs; but then she showed me the bottle, and I said, yes, Stelazine can do that. She only took the drug once, but a week later she was still having "side effects" and finally went to a doctor to get another drug to stop them.
Once, to my disturbed amazement, I met a Saudi couple who had Thorazine prescribed to their baby for colic. It made him go to sleep. I was disturbed because long-term use of Thorazine can cause "tardive dyskinesia," a chronic neurological dysfunction. It may be less bad than the symptoms of schizophrenia, but baby colic is another matter.

It is also used for relief from a migraine. When I get one that is really bad, I go to the emergency room and they will give me a shot of 150mg demerol and 75 visterol or 75 thorzine. The thorzine counteracts the nausea that demerol causes.

Yes, it's still used for schizophrenia and severe bipolar patients. Ever heard of the "Thorazine shuffle"? People on it are just listless...but it keeps them from being violent.

i liken it to "horse" tranquilzer. i have a friend who takes several large doses a day and it makes him "normal". he's a basket case w/o it, though. i took half one once and was asleep in 30 minutes for 10 hours. don't know if they still use it.

Psychiatrists seldom use it any more because there are much more effective antipsychotics that have fewer side-effects.
