My father used to be an alcoholic. He got sick and quit over 7 yrs ago. The doc gave him hydroxyzine for alcohol withdrawals & anxiety. 5 months ago he though he didn't need it any more and now he has severe anxiety & paranoia. His hearing became sensitive, he is scared to use his credit card, only drinks out of water bottles and checks them before he opens it, hardly sleeps, moans and whines. Up until 5 days ago he refused to take any medication b/c he was scared of the side effects. This has been so stressful for my mom, so I called the mental health crissis clinic and they came out to convince him to take his old med hydroxyzine. He took it and the next day he had a severe panic attack and I had to call 911 & the police to force him to the hospital. They did tests and didn't feel the need to keep him there in the mental health clinic. When we brought him home he was furious with us & said he would never forgive us. He stoped that, & is taking his meds, but I don't see any change yet.

hydroxyzine is the ONLY medication he will take. It took me 5 months to convince him to take this. It worked for him in the past, but he is far worse now b/c it was untreated for so long.

He's probably going to need stronger than hydroxazine...that is used for itching, anxiety, allergies, etc. It's not the number 1 prescribed drug for anxiety...I would try to keep convincing him to see a doctor..keep encouraging him. Hydroxizine is NOT a good drug for alcohol withdawel either..that was weird that his Doc chose that. I feel for you..Just hang in there. If he tries to hurt himself or others, they will keep him and figure out the right meds for him...It might help if you keep a daily journal of his moods so if he does need to see a doctor, you will have it for reference...that's what they will ask...how have his moods been...up and down, always sad, angry, etc. gl

what is his diagnosis? what other meds does he take?

hydroxyzine is a very weak anti-anxiety medication......

but others like klonopin or valium are addictive and if he just got off of alcohol...it is unlikely that they will give him anything addictive...

i'm really sorry you and your family are going through this.....

He needs God more than any medicine.

In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!
(Digestion of above can even prevent depression and suicidal thoughts.)
