Many sources (reliable and not so) say "positive ANA occur in about 5% of healthy people". I've found references in peer reviewed published research to criteria for "positive" in research as anything from 1:40 to up to 1:80. My ANA is 1:160 and I have fatigue, weight loss, fevers, bad headaches, rashes (face and arms/legs), sometimes disabling joint pain, paresthesia + a family hx of autoimmune disease (mixed connective tissue). But when I ask about my ANA level which is reported "positive" by the labs who run the bloodwork, I've had two doctors dismiss it and quote the old "5% of the healthy population" line. I'm looking for a reliable, more concrete reference what that healthy 5% have as ANA levels (I mean does that 5% include folks at 1:40 and 1:80?) Even some reference to what is used conventionally in a clinical diagnostic (not screening, diagnostic) setting would be helpful. Thanks.

My best friend's aunt is 39 and was just told by her doctors that her scans came back showing positive signs of MS. She still has to go back on Thursday for more testing to be certain. I have known this woman for most of my life, in fact her niece and I have kind of went our separate ways over the years, but I always kept in touch with aunt bobbie. I love her to death. I went to sit with her today to talk and just see how she is doing and if she needed anything. The most heartbreaking thing she said to me way "I have to learn to live like this and I can't stand it" she was crying and I didn't know what to say to her. All I could manage was "Well, you aren't sure what it is yet. The sooner you find out, the sooner you get the proper treatment and hopefully everything works out from there." I just made her sit down and rest and I did everything that needed done. What can I do to help her and encourage her. I know very little about this disease. What is MS and how does it affect people?

I notice I cannot get a full 8 hours of sleep unless I deprive

myself of sleep until 2:30 in the morning. When I try to sleep at

about 10:30-11:00 I notice that I wake up around 2:30 and I

can't go back to bed. Sometimes my heart is racing, and my

family says it an anxiety attack. When this happens I do my

best to try and relax myself by playing some video games until

I get tired again. I just think its weird. I have asthma by the way.

Can it be my breathing patterns during my sleep that wakes

me up?

I feel like they are going to give out on me when I sit down in a chair and sometimes it is hard for me to get back up. My left knee is really starting to cause me a lot of grief, so I scheduled an appointment with a Orthopedic surgeon on 3/23 and hope he can shed some light on the problem. I am dieting off a few pounds in hopes that will help. Sometimes they hurt really bad.
I have floor nursed for about 25 years and wonder if my knees are going to poop out on me. Do you have any idea what kind of test they will run and how can they tell what is wrong with my knees.
I am an onco nurse and dont know anything about orthopedics. Please fill me in if you know anything.

My mom's had this disease since she was pregnant with me (24 years ago). She had a thyroidectomy and didn't need medication after that. Recently, she's been advised that her thyroid has grown back and she may need surgery again. My question isn't about her though (that's just background...) I've been experiencing hyperthyroid-like symptoms recently and wonder if I'm being psycho-somatic or there's something to worry about. (There is a genetic link). I've had drenching night sweats four of the last five nights, cannot rest when I sleep, am fatigued with a diffuse all-over body ache, have a sudden dark pigmentation framing my eyes underneath (almost like a sunglasses tan, but it's most definitely not as I don't wear them), have had irregualr heart palpitations and for some reason have had really itchy extremities...
The reason I ask here and not at the local doctors' is that I'm in a foreign country and it is a huge expense to see the doctor here as a non-resident...

I had been having difficulty swallowing so while awaiting a appt to see an ENT I ate a pinch of potatoe chips and I felt like it was stuck in my throat. I could breath okay but the sensation would not go away. The ENT diagnosed me with GERD with laryngopharyngeal reflux. I have been on Prevacid 30mg twice a day and Pepcid Complete for 2 weeks. I haven't ate anything but mashed potatoes and pudding for 2 weeks and I have no relief whatsoever. My ENT did not do any tests except look up my throat with a mirror. I am getting depressed at the fact that I cannot eat what I want to because everytime I try to eat solids I feel the feeling of something being stuck in my throat worse! If anybody has or has had this problem please give my some advice because I don't know what else to do! Thanks

My husband works on the river. The other day he was doubled over with pain coming from his lower back to his middle abdomen. He was also vomiting neon green crap. I took him to the ER and they didn't give us any idea to what the problem may be. They said he has a blockage in his small intestines and to go see his regular doctor. The pain has went away some but now he has black under his eyes. Anybody have any ideas on this? He is not running a feaver and the symptoms I listed are the only ones he has! Cant get into see regular doctor for a few days! Should I be worried, and what could be the problem. He also has stopped the vomiting.

Let me start by saying this isn't a, "omg I need fake sick school tomorrow HELP!" question. The past two weeks I've had scattered blackouts which I'm assuming are fainting spells. Yesterday I was sitting at my desk finishing up some homework and suddenly my vision got incredibly blurry. I woke up a few minutes later in on hallway floor a couple of meters away from the room that the desk was in. I made the mistake of keeping it to myself the first few times but I was genuinely scared after realizing I'd moved at least five meters before I finally fell. My parents think I'm faking to get out of school, giving me the "Take some Tylenol and lie down" routine. Anyone know a way to convince them I'm telling the truth before I crack my head open at school?

Everytime I wake up (at least after 4 hours of sleep) I get this crushing pain in my chest and back area. I feel as though my muscles are having extreme tightness. But my breathing is not affected. I jab hard on my chest and I don't feel the usual kinda pain that comes along with muscle aches. And best/worst of all, the pain goes away after 30 minutes when I wake up and the day goes on as normal = no pain. Only when I wake up after 4 hours of sleep!!! Has gone on for like 2 weeks already. Thought that smoking was a factor but no diff (smoke a max of SIX STICKS a week) Went to the doc, did an ecg and found that everything's in the clear. Some of my friends say that it's stress related. Not being in denial but I'm a happy-all-the-time kinda person. Always do a self quick check to maintain a frustration-free status. Any thoughts on this?
