Probably a consultation first. Then depending on the problem they may reschedule you for a light test or colonscopy. The light test alone is usually fairly simple. Everyone I have ever talked to who had this done was not put to sleep and only talked of mild discomfort. The prep for the colonscopy is not fun and usually requires anesthesia (medicine to put you to sleep), but way worth it to find out what is going on. They'll probable have you drink liquid laxatives the previous day and you won't be able to eat anything starting from this time until after you have the test. For the laxative, I recommend fleet's phosphosoda. You can get it over the counter at your local pharmacy. They all taste really bad. But, this product only requires you to drink about 90mL instead of 1 gallon of laxative. Check with your doctor first though to make sure you don't have any pre-existing illnesses that would prevent you from using it. Best wishes on the results.

The first visit to a Gastroenterologist is pretty much just a meet and greet. Even though all of your information was sent over from the referring doctor, he/she still needs to ask about your symptoms and do an exam so they can see for themselves. At my first visit, the doctor asked what symptoms I've been having, how long I've been having them, any symptoms I've been having that I didn't think about (i.e. weight loss and headaches), did a quick physical exam, and set up the first two test (a CT and an upper GI scope)

They are just gonna ask you alot of questions and take your blood pressure, blood and urine. After that they will schedule you for the real terrible tests if need be.
