I'm reading mixed info. Some say this is pre diabetes others say it's not. I'm hoping someone who has been through this journey themselves or with their child can tell me.

We have been told my son has impaired glucose tolerance by our family physician. He is six. He is going to see a dietician next week and a peditrician in two weeks. In the meantime, we are monitoring his blood sugar levels and using ketostix. Just this week he started showing mild to moderate ketones in the a.m.
This is a new development. The first morning when he showed moderate ketones his blood was 3.2. His lowest number yet and we were nervous. Is this normal for a child with impaired glucose?

Can they eat Frosties/Ricicles - sugar-coated cereal, cakes, doughnuts, biscuits, sweets/chocolate. What changes do they have to make to their diet?
What happens if they have to much - is it hypoglycaemia?

I used to believe that. My mother was told by a doctor that the candy she ate caused her diabetes, while I was still in my early teens. At that point, I quit putting sugar on my cereal, avoided sweets, and learned to like unsweetened foods. Well, guess what.... 35 years later, I find out I'm diabetic. No, folks... it's not sugar. It's genetic predisposition, poor diet, poor weight management, and sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise). Since adopting a rather comprehensive lifestyle change, I've found that managing your blood sugar is not that difficult if you're willing to make a few easy changes in your routine. I managed a 5.8 on my hemoglobin A1C test last month. Check out my diabetes information webpage for details: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

I know that there's a blood glucose meter, but is there a meter for cholesterol? I saw a doctor on 20/20 use one, but I'm not sure if it's sold in drugstores. Thanks!

my type 1 diabetic friend has an upcoming doctor's appointment where she will be asked if she wants a pump instead of giving herself shots.....she doesn't know if she should get it, though, because 1. she plays three sports 2. she doesn't want to have a pump attached to her all the time 3. lately, she hasn't had to give herself shots that frequently so it's not even a hassel..........

on the other hand, everyone she has spoken to has told her that the pump is the best thing that's happened to them. what should she do? any input?? thanks!

Due to Chrohn's the fiber in foods creates havoc along with the salads and veggies. The fruits create higher amounts of glucose in my blood causing issues for the diabetes. I need to find a diet that will allow me to lose weight and still eat healthy.

Clothing areas mostly affected are the (where the waist band of pants are, mostly to the sides of the navel) stomach and some in the chest area (stomach is the worst) and the thighs (where also pants rub) It hurts to the touch, when removing clothing. Laying in bed does not seem to bother--my hubby, but yet lower extremities are not affected as we have been told to expect for a diabetic. Yet he does get muscle cramps in his leg quite a bit. Left hand feels like it is cramping and draws inward some (yes, he smokes) and he says he feels like he has lost alot of muscle strength (some of this we are sure is due to age-44 and lack of exerise and physicial activity). Yes he has diabetes and is on insulin, metformin and amaryl (or the generic version thereof). His endocrynologist was not overly concerned, but hubby says it feels like it is getting worse. What should we/he be doing other than making another appointment very soon???

I've lost about 30 pounds with 100 more to go. But I feel depressed. I've changed my eating habits. My question is this: is this a reflection on me and the control I have over diabetes if my A1C went up after the doctor changed and lowered my meds? I was having lots of low-blood sugar incidents, so my doctor took me off sulfoneureas (sp?). With just the glucose control, my A1C shot back up. Is this a sign of poor control or just that my body needs certain drugs to work right?

I am continuing to lose weight and I am continuing to exercise. I'm also continuing to eat right. Everything else -- cholesterol, kidneys, eyesight, nerves -- are all okay. Is it possible for me, a 38 year old woman weighing 330, to lose the weight and get off medication? That's my goal. How realistic is this?

How many people out there are afraid to check your sugars because you fear the reading on the meter? That bothers me too. When I check it and the numbers are high, I feel like a failure.
