After a few crazy weeks and several posted questions (thanks everyone for the answers) my son has been diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. He is six. The doctor told me that his pancreas is still functioning at this point. While we're waiting to see an endrocronologist I was wondering.... at what point would he be given insulin? Will they wait until his pancreas is deystroyed or start him sooner? It just seems that it would be hard to regulate.
Thanks

I also have no family history of the disease. What in the world went wrong!?!?

Everything I read is about losing weight, exercising, eating healthy. I did all of that before I was diagnosed. WTF!?!?

I just found out that I have TYPE 2 diabetes, and I have just started to lose the extra 50lbs that I carry around on me everyday. Do I HAVE to take medication for it, and if so, is there one that DOES not make you gain weight?????? :( Can I just change my diet and it will "fix" itself?

My cholesterol is just a little bit high and I read that a glass of red wine now and then is good to bring up the good cholesterol numbers. I just want like half a glass every other day. Is it okay to drink just a little when taking insulin?

I was wondering if back pains are also a sign of diabetes...being that everytime I am about to sit down I get this pain usually around the tailbone area, after I sit the pain goes away, and when I'm about to get back up the pain starts again but when I am completely standing it doesn't hurt. I hope this is understandable to read...please give me some feedbacks...thanks.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a site or organization that helps diabetics (and other chronic illness sufferers) get their meds if they fall upon bad times and cannot afford it on their own.
My bf got laid off from his job and is starting to run low on his fast acting insulin, he no longer has insurance or income because of it.
Does ANYONE know the site/organization or what we should do?

He's not going to run out tomorrow or anything but it's low enough that normally we'd be heading to get more today or tomorrow normally.

My stepfather has diabetic foot ulcers and has had several toes and part of his foot amputated. The doctors have told him for years that they are just going to have to keep cutting and cutting until there is nothing left of him. I heard that there is a laser treatment that has proven extremely effective in these circumstances...has anyon else heard of it and where can I get more information?
