If you've just been diagnosed (I assume with Type 1), give it time for your body to adjust and get back on track. Previously, you were peeing out all of the calories your body needed due to high blood sugar.

The number 1 issue is to make sure your BG levels are as close to normal as possible in order to gain and maintain a healthy weight.

Then try adding more calories daily via good complex carbs, lean protein, and good fats.

A dietitian would also help here.

If you do have Type 1, make sure you do not have any other associated diseases like Graves or Celiac Disease, both of which can cause weight loss or make it hard to gain weight. Your doctor can screen you.

DON'T drink raw eggs!

I'm 5'-8" tall and currently weigh 140 lb., ideal for my height. Once I was at 215, then started losing weight quickly (a symptom of Type 2). When I reached about 160, i was diagnosed. Over time, I lost more weight and had an episode that put me in the hospital, and my weight got to 117.

While I was in the hospital, protein shakes were given to me with meals. Now on insulin, I'm back to my normal weight and feel wonderful. Humalog insulin before meals and Lantus before bedtime is my current regimen.

I'd say to use a bit more insulin if your doctor OKs it. More insulin will process more glucose into your body instead of letting it stay in your blood. But again, check with your doctor before doing anything like that.

to crazywoman, that's mostly type 2 diabetics, I know a few type 1s that need to gain weight.

To asker I really hope that you find a good plan, my bf is having the same problem he's 5'9" and only weighs 120lbs..

What he's trying is protein shakes (the kind body builders use) and like the one person said the slow type carbs. you should be able to call a nutritionist there and get a diet worked out for real cheap. (ind. at hosp, or general practice)

Eating a lot of protein rich foods will help you to gain weight. Especially meat. If it is still on the market, there is a product called Geriplex (related to Geritol I think). It is a vitamin, mineral pill that really peps up your appetite. Any "stick to the ribs" food such as meat and bread will put weight on, just be careful of any starches or sugars.

Why would a diabetic want to gain weight? I thought they were supposed to keep their weight down. To gain weight, one needs to take in high cal. foods which are usually full of high sugar content, and not exercise much. Things which are not recommended for diabetics.

Do NOT drink raw eggs. You could get Salmonella!!

The thing is, there are carbs that are broken down quickly and carbs that are broken down slowly. You need to eat more slow-carbs. I'm pretty sure you can find them in dark meat in turkey and chicken and stuff like that.
