Yes diabetes can be diagnosed before birth. You need to take a blood test. I also want you to know that you can get temporary diabetes after birth. So blood work is in order.

NO. There is NO WAY to diagnose diabetes before birth.

1) An unborn baby's blood sugar would be regulated via the mother, through the placenta. Even after the fetus begins to make their own insulin later on, the mother would in theory still compensate to maintain normal blood sugar if needed.

2) We cannot genetically test fetuses yet for any of the genes related to Type 1 diabetes (the non-preventable kind usually diagnosed in children). We also don't even know all of the genes responsible, and autoimmune Type 1 diabetes also requires a trigger (like a virus) to develop. This would occur outside the womb. Just having the genetics alone doesn't mean the child will actually develop Type 1 diabetes.

There are RARE cases of Type 1 diabetes that are not autoimmune, and caused by a single genetic defect in the insulin signalling pathway. These cases can appear anywhere from right AFTER birth, to 6 months of age.

Perhaps one day we will be able to test for the GENES for autoimmune Type 1 diabetes in utero, but like I mentioned, this does NOT mean the child will get it 100%.

If you are talking about YOURSELF (I guess your wife) having diabetes while pregnant, then look up "Gestational Diabetes" on the web. This is a form of Type 2 diabetes while pregnant. Type 2 diabetes in not related to Type 1 diabetes (usually diagnosed in childhood). Your child will NOT be born with diabetes just because you have Gestational Diabetes.

Since Type 2 diabetes can usually be prevented, and it *generally* is triggered by being obese and eating a poor diet, you can almost always prevent it in children by making sure they maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Unless you have a rare genetic type of Type 2 diabetes called MODY in your family, there is really no reason why a child should get Type 2 diabetes.

When it comes to Type 2 diabetes, they will NOT be born with it, and it can be prevented.

if one of the child's parents has diabeties the child has a 50% chance of developing it at one point in their life. my bf's mother has it. he has it. his sister does not but she may develop it. it's a guessing game. obesity can also lead to diabeties which otherwise may not have occured. so can other factors.
