I've heard that when it works, it's great at reducing or eliminating the need for supplemental insulin. I have heard that it has a pretty low rate of sucess however, and usually ends up not working. I am not sure how accurate the info is, though.

Islet Cell transplantation is a sound theory that is still being fine tuned for further use. Many people in trials experience success in becoming independent of exogenous insulin injections/pump infusions. However, some people reject the islets after a certain period, and require new transplants. So far the reactions are variable, but favorable. I am not certain if there are any current trials in the U.S. I know Canada has done a lot of clinical testing and research.

I have heard great things about this. It has led to the person I know who underwent the procedure to be able to be insulin free for the first time in over 25 years. Really amazing!
