people thinking that I did something to myself to "get" diabetes. I am a type 1 and I hate that people thing I caused this to myself, or when people think they know what I can't eat. Another thing is when others try to tell me what to eat, or oh you don't need insulin, go to the health food store and buy some herbal supplements.

I have quite a few. One of the worst I have heard has been, well, if you don't like taking shots why don't you just lose weight then your disease will go away. Number one, I am type one so since my pancreas doesn't work anymore, i highly doubt that will fix my problem and number two, there are plenty of thin people in the world who are type 1 diabetics!
Also I hate taking shots in a public place, like at work or in the college community center and people ask me if I am on drugs. I hate the ignorant people who think that every person taking a shot is a drug user and should be written off. no. That just annoys me.
I also just got dumped and I have a good feeling it was because of my diabetes. He was afraid he was going to catch it. YOU CANT CATCH DIABETES. When he first said it I thought he was kidding and I laughed then i realized he was serious. Then he went off saying he doesn't want his kids to be diabetic and he thought that all my kids would come out of me with diabetes. Even though I told him over and over again that I am my mothers only diabetic child and she was diabetic when she had me.

I was pretty recently diagnosed, and can definitely relate to the other posters here in terms of how many friends and especially family members have tried to give me "advice" on how to eat. But really, I think the thing that has bothered me most is what people don't say. Being diagnosed as diabetic has been a roller-coaster of emotions for me; It runs through both sides of my family quite heavily, and I had an aunt that died in her 30's from complications and who had small children that were close in age to my own. It's surprised me that most everyone, upon finding out I'm now diabetic, immediately starts giving me advice on how to eat and what to do, but nobody asks me how I'm actually feeling or doing. I think this experience has definitely raised my awareness that sometimes it's just better to put aside the urge to be the counselor or dietitian and just try to be the friend or concerned loved one. Interesting question, and a good one for us all to think about; thanks for bringing it to the table!

I know nurses (more than 1!) who reply "Do you take insulin" after hearing that someone is a TYPE 1 diabetic.
DOH!
That personally blows my mind. Do they even bother to explain the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 in nursing school? Or did everyone skip that lecture?
Or a nurse who couldn't believe that a diabetic could match their insulin to their carb intake. I tried to explain that a patient COULD have a treat, and she replied "I have no idea why the doctor has approved for us to just give more insulin for a regular snack. That is wrong". Um...hello...what do you think YOUR pancreas does when you eat?
OR, a nurse who thinks fruit won't raise BG because it's "natural" sugar. Um...ok!
I think ignorance stems from a lack of knowledge about Type 1 diabetes, and "old-school" mindsets of healthcare workers.
I can see Average Joe wondering why a Type 1 can't take an "insulin pill" or wonder if a baby with Type 1 was bottlefed Coke (Doh!), but a healthcare worker clueless? Not acceptable in my opinion!!!

I hate the diabetic police that will tell me what I can and cannot eat.
Also a few times after I've told someone that I'm diabetic, they respond, "but you're not fat?"
Or another one, when you have low blood sugar and people assume you didn't take your medication.
I could go on and on...
Reginachick-
I know what you mean about healthcare professionals. One of my close friends is a recovery nurse and she is clueless about diabetes.
Dr. Evil-
Did you set that woman straight?

" Your a diabetic, you can't eat that " That pisses me off highly and most of the time I'll eat whatever it is just because someone said I couldn't because of being a diabetic. Just because I'm a diabetic don't mean I can't enjoy the same things as everyone else!

I am not diabetic, but it does run in my family. When people find out that my mom and grandma have it, they look at me very weird. It is like I am destined to have it and they are somehow cursing me. It is rude. I would not wish diabetes on anyone. Especially since I now have to get regular blood tests for it.

I am a diabetic and the comments that bother me the most are the ones that are ignorant... such as... "you cant have that diet coke.. its got caffeine in it!" then I have to take the time to explain diabetes has NOTHING to do with caffeine intake its SUGAR intake... or the one that says..."you can't have candy why are you eating that lifesaver?" then I have to explain that I just took my blood sugar and I NEED that piece of candy because if I don't have my level raised up very soon.. they will have to carry me..."
Just basic ignorant comments... don't mind if they ask questions about it though....
sigh
