In my 9th grade English class we are reading To Kill A Mocking Bird, and I have an assignment (to go along with the story) of making a southern cookbook. I need to know what are some food from the south, do you have a recipe that you'd like to give me(I'd give you credit, if it's yours or from your family) or a website that I may find some. Any and all suggestions are appreciated and I thank you all in advance.
God Bless...

In the US, we have restaurants that serve foods from many different countries.

The claim is that many restaurants tone down the food for Americans.

Also, I have coworkers from Italy who hate Italian food served here - too much garlic, strong flavors that overpower the real taste of the food. If the chef is Italian and knows my coworkers are from Italy, the chef actually cooks differently than what's on his menu.

Supposedly it's the same with Chinese food. Chinese people get different food vs what's on the menu.

My question... Without making special request of the chef which cuisine served in America is close to what is served in the "old" country? Chinese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Japanese, etc, etc, etc?

Any opinions?

I have been making Chinese potstickers that people were going crazy for, but I noticed that in the ingredients, Benzoate is added to keep the freshness of the product. How much do they usually put in one package of dumpling skin(approx.42pieces)??

I was riding in a taxi and I saw this random restaurant that caught my eye. It had Asian lettering and it also read Sichuan Cuisine. What exactly is that?

Well. I would like to make a Filipino dessert, but nothing that would be considered "gross" or "strange" here in the USA because I would like to make a Filipino dessert for a church gathering.

Please help. I've tried Thai food before and I hated it. My boss decided today that he wants to take us to Thai food with some important clients. I can't stand curry, I absolutely detest it because it stinks bad. While I like some Chinese food (Well at least what I've encountered from places around here that is called Chinese food), I generally like my food simple. I'm a meat and potatoes kinda guy.

What can I order at a sit down Thai restaurant that most resembles food I might find at a typical American style or basic Chinese takeout place (like chicken w/ broccoli and rice)?

Please help so I know what to order that will be least likely to make me suffer. My stomach isn't very forgiving to strange foods.

Likes: Plain or brown rice, chicken, beef, shrimp, pork, broccoli.
Hates: Curry, fish sauce, anything overly stinky, excessive onions, coconuts, mint.

I heard a rumor (from my Mexican grandmother) that the corn husks we use to make tamales are not taken from the outside of corn. She said that farmers grow fields of special corn stalks that don't produce corn, they just produce the husks. I can't substantiate this on the web, so I was just wondering if anyone out there knew about this. Do corn stalks grow just bundles of husks? Is this purposeful or accidental?
