My son swears by Buca de Beppo. Also a chain, but WAY better than Olive Garden, and smaller; better food, better atmosphere, and food served family-style.
They have locations country-wide.
By the by, and for the record, the main Bocalli's is east of Ojai. There is a branch in Oak View which is south of Ojai, but it's not as atmosperic as the main restaurant east of town.

Olive Garden is a good restaurant, and is reasonably price. You may also want to try and find a small, privately owned establishment like a Ma and Pa restaurant. The atmosphere is often more home-style, and the price-to-portion size ratio is more in your favor. Chain establishment are a good idea if you take advantage of the specials and the "all you can eat" offerings.

Macaroni Grill -- lots of locations
Johnny Carinos -- Discover Mills
Carrabbas -- lots of locations throughout Georgia
Baraonda -- my very favorite -- located in midtown Atlanta, near the Fox Theatre
Brio -- buckhead, perimeter mall, other locations
Artuzzis - locations in Alpharetta, Atlanta, Decatur, and others
Check www.citysearch.com for your city and click on restaurants. There should be a link to click that lets you choose by cuisine.
If you're anywhere close to Brunswick, Georgia, go to Matteo's. The son runs the place now, but the parents are Italian immigrants. The baked ziti is to-die-for good.

The best I have seen anywhere is Boccalli's in Ojai Ca. It is located on Ojai Ave. South just as you leave town.
Now, if had said where you live, more people might have been able to help you. But I stand by what I say. This IS the best I have ever had.
Ojai is located in the mountains above Ventura Ca. Ventura is just north of L.A. (About 60 miles) Between L.A. and Santa Barbara. Good eating!

Do some on line research from a local newspaper (or alternative newspaper) for small, family owned Italian restaurants with reviews. Many restaurants have menus on line, or you can always call the restaurant to see if they can fax you a menu, or go to the restaurant before booking the birthday dinner party and look at the menu yourself. I tend to stay away from chain restaurants, especially for a special occasions like a birthday.

Type in your hometown and state then type "Italian restaurant" in your browser window. I am with that one guy that gave you an answer already........take her to a Mom and Pop place.........stay away from Olive Garden. Anyone can go there anytime. Do something unique and take her to a restaurant that she wouldnt normally be able to go to.

OLIVE GARDEN IS OUT , DECLINING QUALITY IN MY OPINION. JOHHNY CARINO'S SERVED UP A GREAT MEAL RECENTLY THEY'RE IN ATHENS. A LITTLE BITTY PLACE CALLED INGENO'S IN JEFFERSON IS THE LOCAL CHOICE FOR A LUNCH , SHORT MENU BUT GOOD FOOD.
