SHABU-SHABU
This dish can be adapted to a vegetarian version.
The presentation:
A hotplate type burner is set on the table. A pottery bowl of broth is put on the burner to simmer.
You receive a platter of raw meat (usually Kobe style beef or chicken, both sliced paper thin) along with an assortment of raw vegetables such as bean thread noodles, bok choy, mushroom, tofu cubes, etc.. [You can delete the meat and add more types of vegetables for a vegetarian version]
You dip the meat and vegetables into the steaming broth until they are done, then dip them into various sauces that are provided.
This is a fun way to entertain, very different!!

Talk about sushi. Sushi is trendy now, and there is a lot of info on-line about the history, preparation and eating etiquette. Be careful to emphasis the total experience of Japanese cuisine-not just taste, but the artistic appreciation of visual presentation.

I am a former chef and worked in Japan for a short time, and I was facinated with all those mentioned and one not as well known.

The Sumo wrestlers eat a style known as "Chanko", it is one more fit those with a hearty appetite, like Shabu-Shabu it is a communial dish but larger portions and more a subject that would embrance not only a cuisine but a culture and a sporting tradition. It is also one known for winter cooking styles to.

Here is a link to give you more to digest, pardon the pun??

Ramen... It's easy to bring a package to class as a demo.

Also, everybody knows what ramen is (those noodles that only cost 10 cents a package), but you can talk about how ramen is made (fresh noodles that deep fried before packaging) and how the Japanese serve ramen (topped with various meats, tempura, hard cooked eggs, etc.

Sushi, sashimi, shabu-shabu is rather difficult for you to show what it is in class and you may talk over people's heads.

Well there is:

*Yakisoba- Fried noodles with vegetables and sometimes meat

*Tempura- Fried vegetables and shrimp

*Mochi- pounded rice often eaten with anko(bean paste) soy sauce or this brown powder stuff, I think it's so good

*Of course, there are a variety of soups you could talk about but that's just boring

*Yaki Tori but it's just chicken fat on a stick. I find it quite nauseating

* Sushi and Sashimi

*I have forgot the names to many other dishes since I have been gone for almost 2 years now :(
