I was reading this blog posting:

http://www.dumblittleman.com/2007/08/101-ways-to-save-money-on-home-energy.html

It says "Set the fan on your central air conditioner to "on" rather than "auto." This will circulate air continuously, keeping the temperature more even throughout the house and aiding in dehumidification. Will it really save energy? What about the energy used to run the fan continuously?

Every time I go to the gym i see all these poeple, myself included, wasting their energy. Couldn't the machines we work out on (treadmills, etc.) be configured to actually feed power back into the grid? Or at the very least- to power their own display screens so they wouldn't need to be plugged in?

I live in New England. My fam and I are planning to add on and go up later this summer and the hydro air system has been chosen as their first pick for a heating/cooling system. However, I like to be 'green', save money, etc. We currently have a base board heater, and I would like to know which is the best decision.

I'm part of the Sustainability group at school, the school principal is a d**k and doesn't care about the environment, he only cares about money.
Me and the group will be talking in front of him and the school council (the people in-charge of the school's money) To convince them to put solar panels on the school roofs.
I know that it definitely will help the school save on electricity bills, but it WILL cost a lot of money to put them in.
In the end we just wanna reduce carbon emissions!
HELP :)

I'm wondering if using the disposal makes it harder for the city to clean the water for use again.

If so, how?

Please do not preach to me about the morality of using or wearing leather, that is irrelevant to my question.

I'm curious whether living up against a forested area effects a house's heating/cooling efficiency and how much? I've noticed, especially when I'm out walking in the evening, the cool, almost cold, air that can waft out of a forested area

The sky? BLUE
The water? BLUE
The wind-turbines making electricity? WHITE? Why?!!!!!!!!

Paint them blue - and everyone will be happy! Make the backs of them white so ships don't bump into them, okay?

This is the most important post I have ever posted, PLEASE star it, and get as many people as possible to see it. We need to cut down on oil - it's polluting everything, getting scarce, causing war, and one day it will run out.

I am thinking of getting rid of a lot of old clothes and shoes, and would love to find an environmentally safe way to dispose of them. Can someone please offer suggestions for me? Are there any environmental clothing/shoe "pick-up" companies you know of in the Chicagoland area?

The whole ethanol idea is going to be tragedy to our country. With it taking 1700 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of ethanol and that it takes foreign fuel and fossil fuels to produce ethanol, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to know this is BAD idea. I believe the Agri-Business lobby and ethanol lobby are doing their job, but the politcians are either being bought off or they aren't being told the whole story with using ethanol.

In Australia they are building a solar farm that uses mirrors to heat up air. then the air is funneled up a tall tower where there are fans that take in the power from the speed of the moving hot air. Wouldn't this hurt the envirorment because it is sending out supper heated air out into the atmosphere?

To elaborate:

In the state of Massachusetts, a certain brand drink may not have any deposit return. And therefore, these bottles/cans will not be accepted by the bottle return machines in any supermarket (the most common of places to have these machines).

I do NOT want the money I receive from the bottle deposit. I'm just curious how I can go about recycling bottles/cans that won't be accepted by these machines.

It seems like other bottle recycling recepticles are few and far apart. Is there some simple way to resolve my dilemma? Do I need to drive miles and miles to throw away bottles/cans that the supermarket won't take?

This feels like a basic recycling question. Please be thorough...links are appreciated

I do not drive nor do I own a vehicle. I am a native resident of NYC and never had the need. Recently, I see a trend developing of people giving up their cars and using public transportation. For those that have made this choice, what was your reasoning? Was it financial, environmental or something else?

'Kay, so finally my family has decided we're sick of recycling our water bottles and hoping they aren't deteriorating on us. We're aiming to buy the sturdy camp-style bottles that we can reuse and carry anywhere without worrying about them decomposing. We have two for camping that are enormous and kind of worry me in terms of size.

Where do we go to find ones that will fit inside, say, a tote bag or a large purse?
