I'm wondering if using the disposal makes it harder for the city to clean the water for use again.

As I interpret your question a garburetor is a garbage disposal that grinds up food from your kitchen sink and washes it down the drain. I will proceed on that assumption.

The disposal grinds the food up into small pieces that will be carried along with the sewage water stream. At the disposal plant that kind of food waste organic material can be easily processed because it is inherently not any different from human waste organic material.

Small solids are separated from the waste stream by settling or flocculation and anything that joins the solid stream can be processed without your having to worry about it. The only downside is that some additional water is needed to run the disposal and that adds to the waste treatment plant's liquid load.

The problem with the disposal as the dumping ground is the inability to clearly separate the good from the bad. Any time we put something in our water system (flushing to the street spilling accidents) we impact our environment and of course we make the plumber very happy. We suggest to our readers that you us proper waste management storage rather than the disposal process in the sink.

Step one: reduce your inorganic waste as much as you can by buying in bulk, and buying as many fresh foods as your area of the country can provide you.

Step 2: Recycle the inorganic wastes that you do bring home to the best of your ability.

Step 3: If you can't have/use a compost bin... the "garbeurator" is a better alternative than throwing it into a landfill sealed in a plastic bag.

Step 4: Do a little celebration dance. You've earned it!
