My mom wanted to do her part and go green and save on electricity by putting some flourescent bulbs in. However, when looking at the package closely, she noticed that mercury is contained in the bulbs. She thinks that few people will dispose of them properly, and our landfills will just be contaminated with mercury.

What are your thoughts on this? I realize that this has been the case with florescent "tube" bulbs for years also.

People need to comprehend that if a green product is manufactured more than 500 miles from its point-of-use, then the green aspect of such products is lost. Cargo ships emit tons of CO2 in their travels to and from China.

i was wondering what are some ways to save energy while using my air conditioner (besides just not using it at all). I use it about once or twice a day in short time periods, like for about 1-2hours each. is this better than just leaving it on for 4 hours straight?

any other suggestions would also be very helpful

Wouldn't it be better if, instead of blaming us the people for the amount of rubbish we produce, to make the manufacturers reduce the packaging and maybe we should go back to paper bags instead.

We've got a pretty rude neighbor who has ignored our few tactfully asked requests to remove the smelly mothballs they placed on the ground beneath all of their precious tomato plants that is literally only 2-3 feet from our driveway where my young children frequently play. Is there anything we can do, environmental-wise, in notifying my township to contact them directly for removal of the mothballs in the name of contaminating the ground with naphthalene? Thanks...

With all these ?'s about global warming, it seems to me that some people really don't know what they are talking about. When I was in school in the 70's-80's we were all being taught that we were headed for another ice age. Now people are saying that the globe is getting warmer. Seeing as that temperature records have only been recorded for about 120 years it really seems we really don't know a darn thing about the true global atmosphere as far as the temp. goes. The world has always gone through changes, warming and then cooling, over and over again. Just because we might be in a warming period for a few years, is there really reason for concern? If we were getting cooler would there be the same concern? I'm sure that certain people would try to make a name for themselves then as well. Do you recycle? Recycling always costs more in energy than than using a virgin product. Why do it? It doesn't help anything, in fact due to the cost it hurts more. Why bother?

I think it is impossible to be. Absolutely evrything we do comsumes something.

there is abuilding being built across the road from where i work, which says it will be carbon eautral when completd, but it has taken 8 months more to build because of this, which would immediately make it even worse than a normal building.

i think carbon neautrality is a complete ridiculous fad!

I am all for conerving energy etc, but carbon neurality is stupid

Is it financially worth installing solar panels for electricity and heat (for home use), if you are going to live in the house for 4-6 more years?

Electricity bills come in at $500 per year (for us); how much does installing solar panels cost compare to about $3000 dollars of electricity costs (for 6 years more stay in the house)?

Also, tax deductions must be taken into account.
If it is financially worth installing solar panels- what kind is the most environmentally efficient?
