One thing they can do is start an environmental club so they can teach students to be aware of the environmental problems. Other things they can do will be recycle everything they can; reusing scrap paper for stuff like figuring math problems; using flourescent lights instead of traditional light bulbs; encouraging teachers to carpool, walk, or ride a bike if possible; and encouraging high school students to take the bus (or walk, carpool, bike or take public transportation) instead of driving. If this school doesn't have students who are old enough to drive, the last idea won't apply.

See if they can make it through lunch by generating half the trash they usually do. Schools generally do a poor job being green at lunchtime.

Carpool or walk to school. The buses are usually major polluters. That said, convert the buses to alternative fuels.

Stop using the personal water bottles. These are produced using far more resources than most people realize. Reusable bottles are the way to go.

Every school pick a topic and spend the school year researching it and promoting a letter-writing campaign and/or petitions. Start at the local level and work their way up the ladder.

I hope they do well in this endeavor. What a wonderful opportunity to educate the students and the district, and perhaps, the state.

Whatever you do BIG or SMALL will contribute to a GREENER world and in particular GLOBAL WARMING.

But here is what a lot of our teachers do.

Many have a "Planetpals day" at school once a week or once a month. Incorporating one or more of the ideas below:

-Discuss a Earth Issues once a week
-Start a "walk or bike to school program" among local parents everyday or one day a week.
-Start a teacher walk or ride program to set example! Ride sharing, taking busses or walking and biking to school
-get other schools involved
-teach them about energy consumption-encourage them to dress appropriately using less heat or ac etc.
-teach them how reuse, reduce, recycle saves energy and contributes to less consumption hence less global warming
-Encourage children to recycle everything used at school-by setting up a system for them to recycle -they could be responsible for their classroom or the entire school.) OR Have each grade take a different day of the week!
-Have a "fast" day from using paper and other resources to teach the classroom to be resourceful and conserve
-Have environmental lessons and/or activities (ie have kids read a story, make recycle signs, write a story about global warming, or other environmental issues,
-Plan an America Recycles Day or Earthday event or collection
-Put on an Earth Friendlyor Global Warming play
-Discuss what other schools are doing
-Plant an organic garden or trees at school (get the home depot or other company to donate the needed items). Not only will they learn something valuable they can enjoy the fruits of their labor!
-Get a field trip to the RECYCLE center! For instance the sorting/reclamation center where the trucks come in is particularly interesting!
-Have them do a school or class swap! Yankee Swap. Have student bring in something they no longer use and trade for someone else's (ie toys, books, etc)--This give things a second life and teaches conservation
-Have an Earth Friendly lunch day where they have to bring in healthy lunch and nothing prepackaged-no bottled drinks- only reusable containers and a reusable lunch bag.
-Get local GREEN businesses involved and have them come in and talk about their products or about being Earth Friendly
-Have a poster contest - get local businesses to allow the kids to paint their poster (or hang up) in shop windows--which will inspire others to be more green, too!
-Have the children put on their thinking caps!

Remember every litter bit helps us stay GREEN and pollution FREE.

Planetpals.com has a whole section on global warming and the ozone--easy to understand!

Hope this helps!

Recycle. Have recycling bins in every class room. Seperate the recycling bins by paper,plastic and glass. Another thing your school can do is organise one day where everyone plants flowers,trees,etc, outside of your school. It's a great way to keep this world green, send out the message, and make your school a nicer place. Flowers around the school will really make it look that much better!

Mostly by being greener when eating. Do not buy items from vending machines because most of the stuff sold comes in single serving size packages (not very green.) Also use reusable containers for lunch. Some items may come in recyclable containers, but the containers mostly are not recycled.

I distribute green cleaners to schools among other institutional facilities and I have been researching ways to contribute to the green effort. I was delighted to find a .org that is located in Pleasanton, CA with a significant number of participating schools registered. Check it out: http://www.gogreeninitiative.org/index.php

1. REduce, REuse, REcycle everything: all kinds of paper; steel; computers and parts; used cooking oil; cardboard; water; aluminum cans; plastic bottles; newsprint; printers; ink cartridges; all plastic containers and packaging; books; magazines; Styrofoam; telephone directories;
2. Compost in the back of the school yard;
3. Carpool; use mass transit; ride mopeds or bikes instead of driving; or walk to school whenever possible;
4. Refill plastic water bottles, or Styrofoam cups multiple times before recycling them;
5. Take canvas shopping bags to the store instead of choosing between "paper or plastic".

I would suggest cleaning the streets around your school. You may do this already on Earth Day, but why not do it more?? Also you could maybe go on a field trip to a tree farm and plant some trees.

if you are in "sunny" ca have it use solar electricity from the sun so you don't use so much electricity and gases. get a recycling program going. have them use reusable items and green products to clean. have the kitchen staff feed you all organic or all natural foods. also get untested milk.

Get a good recycling program - recycle papers, packaging, bottles. Plant plants. Promote awareness and tell people what they can do to help.

Remember:
Reusing > Recycling > Landfilling
