I am 56 years old, and open to new ideas. I really want to do something to help. We have made such a mess of our world. I want to be part of the solution. I just need a little help getting started.

If you have one, are you really saving money after taking into consideration the installation costs?
Where does one find what models are available and installers who are familiar with them?

Some geothermal installations involve drilling a well, others involve laying the anti-freeze filled plastic pipes in ditches.
Which is the better system? What has your experience been?
Does someone sell a kit for installing the system yourself?

The small, on-demand gas water heaters are great for saving on energy if you don't need lots of hot water, and the Europeans have been using them at least since the 1960's. They haven't really caught on here, and some plumbers I've talked with don't have a lot of experience with them.
I you have such a water heater, is it reliable? If something goes wrong how difficult is it to find someone to fix it? And are you saving a lot of energy?

This is the kind with a baffled chimney that will heat up a whole wall for hours with just a little bit of wood or coal.
What is your experience with it? Did you design it yourself, have someone else build it, or use a kit?

I was wondering how, if it is even possible to recycle aeresol containers. I opened the valve until I could no longer hear the hiss of the propellent and then I threw it in with the other recyclables (We have comingled recycling). Is that all I have to do or is there more. I live in Monmouth county, NJ.

Do you use them? What are the pluses and minuses compared to "regular" lightbulbs (for example, Philips 60 watt medium base bulbs, etc.)? Are they more expensive than "regular" lightbulbs and do they last as long?

There is so much wasteful activity going on, for example, in Las Vegas, think of how much water and electricity they use and waste; film and television production waste; people who have disregard for the earth and those who share it simply because they feel they are entitled to do so. Doesn't that make you wonder why you have to make adjustments and changes while others continue to waste?

I work for an engineering company. Many of the people around me are "very intelligent", yet they can't seem to figure out that the "Mixed Paper" recycling bin is not for cans, plastic wrap, banana peels, etc. The stupid thing is that the plastic, aluminum and regular garbage bins are RIGHT NEXT TO the mixed paper recycling bin.

If intelligent people can't recognize paper from non-paper, what hope do we have as a society of fixing other problems?

I recently joined and have really liked being able to get rid of extra stuff that I don't need without throwing it away. For example, last night someone came and took away boxes I had leftover from moving.

Have you ever used freecycle? What was your impression of it? Did you have a good or bad experience?

It seems to me that most people involved with this movement are flaky, slackers that have socialist leanings. One only need to look at the questions in these forums to see that many are ill informed and believe that catch phrases equal fact. Yet those that think global warming (just like the next ice age that was coming in the 70's) is just a platform for people like Al Gore to profit from and grab headlines are viewed as the ignorant ones. Why should gas taxes be raised to limit consumption instead of tax breaks being taken from companies that don't meet standards in a timely manner? It is hard for me to take seriously these arguements for the "green" movement when they are presented by people I would not let near my children (a.k.a. hippies) or people that scream alternate fuels yet race around in private jets and won't allow windmills to be built because they block the view (a.k.a. hippocrites).

This morning, while going through some boxes, I found some old shoes (mostly Converse All Stars) that are way too old and beat up to put in a yard sale or to take to Goodwill or a charity that gives away stuff for people who can't afford anything, like homeless shelters or my church's clothing giveaway.

Yet, I don't want to just dump them in a landfill if I can do something with them. Once, a few years ago, I heard about a program that Nike does-- Take old shoes and recycle them into play ground equipment and stuff.

I checked www.earth911.com and the only results I got for the Columbus, OH zip code (we're moving from a Michigan suburb to Columbus; I may as well move them back, what's one more box?) and just found a couple of listings for Salvation Army.

Anyway, I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

My mother always told me to do all of the laundry in one day because the electricity bill would come out smaller, but I never understood why that would be true. However, the older I get, the more I realize that she was right about most things that I thought sounded illogical.

Every single CFL that I own that is 15watts or under is not instant-on. The package claims that it is instant-on, but it is not. Why is this?

I own two 20watt bulbs, and one of them is instant-on. I'm really puzzled because I thought that if one of the 20watts was instant-on, then the both should be. Most of my bulbs are the same brand (GE), but three bulbs are from Sylvania.

Please explain!!! Thanks.

I just got mine today! (August 1, 2007) It's a Sylvania Soft White. 13 watt (60 watt replacement). On the top there is a green sticker that says "Yahoo! Be a better planet, thanks for helping to make a better planet!"

I took a picture for proof!
