To turn your lights off and on when you need to use them. Or just have them on all throughout.

*they say that it takes a great amount of electricity just to initially turn on the light

Yes it is true that on turning on the light there will be a burst of current greater than the steady consumption but it will last only for thousandths of a second. The "surplus" energy will be negligible compared to the steady regime over longer periods of time. Thus saving energy is done by turning lights off and on when you need them.

The greatest amount of electricity in total comes from keeping on the lighbulbs - do not leave them on. There's so little "spike" in electricity usage by turning it on, more in the burning of the lighbulb.

Change to CFL light bulbs, you will save a ton of electricity and it won't matter.

Did you know that 90% of the electricity used to burn a traditional lightbulb goes to heat, and only 10% goes to light. In a CFL it's the opposite

Have fun.

You save enegry when lights are off entirely.
When you leave a room if you intend to return you should leave the lights on.
If you intend to do something else in another room and turn on the light there then the light should be turned off in the room you left.
I am all for saving the environment but I am not reading or watching TV in the dark. My eyesight is just as precious as the environment, LOL

This is all IMO and may help someone else

"They're" flat wrong.

There's a small surge when you turn a light on. It lasts a fraction of a second. It's not very big. How could it be? If it was it would blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. It's completely unimportant. Just ignore it.

It's true that if you turn a fluorescent bulb of and on rapidly you would shorten it's life. But even those should be turned off if you're not going to be using them for more than a few minutes.

They busted this myth on Mythbusters. It doesn't matter what light you use, just turn them off when ever you leave the room.

Lights do use more electricty when you first turn them on, but it's only equevalent to less than a second of continuous use.

I usually leave my lights on if I'm going out (like to the bathroom or to get a snack) and I intend to be right back. Otherwise, I turn them off. Have a nice day!

That is a myth. You are only using electricity when the switch is engaged. Turn the lights off when you don't need them.

Why do people have to ask this question? Turn 'em off and save your money. Fix leaky taps and save your money. Turn the thermostat down and save your money. Funny how people will do these things because hacks like the gorester tell them to do when they should be doing it to put money in their own pockets.

they did a mythbusters on this. it always helps to turn them off whenever you are done with them! along with all other electronics. turning them off saves much more than leaving them on, even if you are going to turn it back on and off 10 more times.
