The long tubes, the halo shaped, and the compact bulbs that wind around several times... how do they compare in their toxic properties?

Is one kind more dangerous to break than another kind?

If so, which are worse &/or 'safer'?

What is the recommended proceedure when one breaks?

Ditto ^ , if it has already been put out in the trash, when you find out about it?

Links to the best Web sites with such info will be appreciated, as will the sharing of expert personal knowledge.

10 years ago we would have gone mad at propsals for Nuclear Power Plants, but nowadays they are becoming almost acceptable as everybody wants to cur back on Co2.

Has Global Warming been a ploy to trick the general public into accepting nuclear energy?

I have some shirts from work that I cannot give to Value Village or Good Will and I really don't want to just throw them in the trash. So, I am hoping someone knows of a service that will take the shirts and recyle them into new and improved stuff?

If I replace my old refrigerator and air conditioner with energy efficient ones isn’t there a tremendous negative effect on the environment? There are the natural materials that need to be extracted from the earth, the energy (factory) used to produce the new products, the staff, and trucking. Then there is the sales environment (building, lights, energy to operate the building, sales people, shipping, my driving to the store – maybe several stores to find the best deal.) Now what to do with the old appliances? More energy to recycle or fill up the land. This doesn’t sound like a good deal for the environment. Shouldn’t we just fix our old items before thinking of replacing them, even if they aren't energy smart?

How hard is it to add to an existing home? How much power would one panel generate? Can you install yourself? Any idea of start-up cost?

I heard that by 2030 that our oil supplies will run out. Is this true?

If it is, then could I speculate that the rise in gas is because the companies realize this and want the most money they can get, and the government doesn't bother to stop them?

Just a speculation, I could be totally wrong....

Can a wood burning fireplace uses a metal chimney that run indoor to release all valuable energy before it cools down and goes out the wall (not roof)?

I know it's hard work to "live off the land" and lessen our impact on the world, but I'd like to do so. Some ways I know already, like using solar panels as my sole source of electricity, and growing all my own food. But what about things like heating water (I guess I could do that over a fire) and getting running water (from a nearby stream is convenient, but not all that practical)? What about refrigeration and going to the bathroom? Anyone know these things?

Can any one let me Know what is the maximum power generation capacity of single solar cell

1.75 Watt or 2 Watt or more than that

2007-08-07 08:50:45 · 4 answers · asked by Anonymous

I see a lot of Solar advocates here and in the media. I looked into it and found it impossible for me because of cost. I looked at a simple 3 Kilowatt, 16 Panel system which is tied to my electric company grid so all I produce just reduces my bill. The cost installed is about $20,000.

I did some research on life of equipment, hours of sunlight, etc., and figure I can only reliably get a max. of about 20 Kilowatt-Hours (KWH) a day 70-80 percent of the time, or about 5000-6000 KWH a year. I assumed a 10 year life of the equipment.

I pay about 10 cents/ KWH for my power, so the system will save me maybe $600/year.

This is rediculous. The system cost me $3000/year (2000 depreciation and 1000 interest @ 5%). The system will never pay itself off. Even if I cut the cost in half, it will not come close to reasonable power costs.

How can anyone promote this as a viable alternative? Maybe it will when power costs on the grid quadruple or more.

Approximately, how big of a wind turbine would one need in order to produce enough electricity to run the a/c for a 1,600 sq. ft. home?

I've heard that it takes 70-80 times the amount of energy to manufacture a CFL as it does a conventional light bulb. Is this true? Also, I've heard that the old CFLs in the landfills contain far more toxic matter than regular light bulbs. Is the CFL campaign just a scam?

Be honest, how much electricity do you waste everyday? May it be forgetting to switch off your computer monitor when not in use, or an unnecessary tube light in the mornings, or turning on geyser for too long.

I do waste, and am trying to avoid it to my best.

What Singapore did was using recycle water to be used for toilets e'g like flushing. They even built the recycling plant and the water are safe to drink. Australia have many bright and intelligent people I'm sure if given the chance the ideas would be put to good use.

The sun puts out enough energy in a day(week), I've read both, NY Times said everyday, to supply the current power needed to power our world. Thats an infinite amount of power. We can even use that power to travel through space. Plus everybody could have their own power plant on their house, or car??!! Come on people its simple. Dark=evil=oil, Light=Heaven=sun!!
Why not... cost...??? Oil companies have billions of dollars, make them pay for it! I know it isn't that simple, but I wish it was...
