I heard that by 2030 that our oil supplies will run out. Is this true?

If it is, then could I speculate that the rise in gas is because the companies realize this and want the most money they can get, and the government doesn't bother to stop them?

Just a speculation, I could be totally wrong....

2030-2050 is the prediction on record.

Oil companies are corporations whose sole purpose is to generate a profit...the more, the better, for their shareholders.

They were smart enough to invest in something that was a short bet, and won. Good for them!

Oil, like G.W. Bush, is a temporary thing. Another similarity is that they are both wrong - and the sooner we aren't under their grasp, the better. It doesn't matter WHEN things run out, as much as it does that we stop supporting it. The Dems are no better.

Keep in mind that it's not just US. China and India will be worse in the coming years unless change happens. We will simply be in a more advantageous economical position if we change fast. The oil might or might not run out by 20XX, but if it doesn't matter because we use the new Australian cylinder turbines for house power, and drive Tesla or other electric cars, then the solution to other nations will occur faster there too. The only question is CAN we break out of our cycle of dependance on the two party system and other large entities fast enough to DO something?

There is a lot of varying speculation about when we will reach peak oil (the maximum output after which we'll start producing less and less oil) and when we'll run out. The most reasonable estimates I've seen are that we have about a century left. It depends on whether our consumption of oil changes and how far we're willing to go to get it (there are some sources like shale and tar sands which are expensive but from which we can get oil).

That's about right, at least for known oil reserves. The best guess is that there are another 20-30 years of unknown reserves that we'll find over the next 2-3 decades. So, the most probabl guess is 2050-2070. But, future finds will be more costly to exploit.

Why else do you think America is leaving plenty of our oil wells untapped, all the while gobbling up other countries???
We're sitting, we're waiting, come 2075 we'll be charging exasberate amounts for oil, muahahahaha!!!

Get over yourself, that figure is based on current oil wells, do you know how much oil has left to be discovered? No, nobody does, Iraq didn't even know it was sitting on a lot of it's current oil supply until the mid-90's, Alaska is said to have just as much oil as Texas, but enviromentalists prevent exploratory drilling.

the number is closer to running out 2100-2150, by then we better have a plan, but for now go ahead drive your Hummers, let your grandchildren fix the mess.

In elementary school I believe they said oil would run out by the year 2000.

The 2030 number is the "currently known oil reserves" which doesn't include the oil we haven't found yet. Or shale and other sources.

If we are really serious about lessening the effects of global warming, ending our dependence on oil, and other environmental concerns, we should ALL be pressing those money grubbers in power into reversing the greatest lie ever perpetuated on the American people. Legalize Industrial Hemp! 1 acre of Industrial hemp can replace 4 acres of trees clearcut for paper and other products. So many consumables can be made from hemp- from linen and food to fuel. Yes, fuel. It is simply amazing to me that the general public does not understand that this simple plant can, in effect, save all of our asses from so many problems.

That is one theory, but another one states that there is at least as much oil yet to be discovered as has been discovered in the past and maybe as much as twice that. In addition, there are other sources of oil that will be brought into play when the economics are right.

Lots of good points ^^ up there. Even if we find something to repace oil, we still will depend on oil for a multitude of things that we rely on every day.
Tires, cosmetics, plastics, petroleum jelly to name just a few.
