We depend on oil for so much besides just fuel for transportation.Things like plastic, fertilizer and a lot of other things too.Could we end up going back to the stone age, technologically speaking?

If you do, I would like to know how it influences your life today. It might just be my environment and where I was raised, but I happen to love the earth in which we live. I love the outdoors, I love the fresh air and I love being spiritual. This defines who I am. I see the earth as connected and all living things part of the same thing. Part of the same energy. I am my happiest when I am on the top of some mountain or by some forest stream. I love it under the stars and I relish in all of the creatures on earth..;.which saddens me at the same time with the way that our earth is getting destroyed by man's footprint. Man will lose his dominion though in time.
Anyway, what are your beliefs and please keep rude and unrelated answers to yourself.... Reply if you have something to say that relates to what I have said.

I'm back again. The woman I spoke to in the customer service dept of the manufacturer of the lamp had NEVER heard of these things exploding. I expressed my anger at the fact there is no cleanup advice on the boxes or that they contain mercury. Also I bet the general public doesnt know you just cant throw one of these things in the bin. They have to be safely disposed of. HOW??? Whats safe?? Now I know someone said in an answer that the levels are so low you dont need to worry about them, BUT I found the following (while I should be working). "In other words there is NO safe level of mercury vapour!" - from http://www.bcd.com.au/AmalgamDocs/LittleBitMerc.htm. AND "Safe' mercury levels may harm adults" - from the Sydney Morning Herald. The more I read the more anxious I get.

If the average person really does what it takes to help the environment are they really helping when you consider the following?

If they buy cars that use less fuel or alternative fuels they usually save some money.
If they buy energy star appliances they usually save some money.
In other words living green saves you money. It also uses oil to manufacture these so called green items.

Now this person puts this money in the bank and the bank makes a loan to someone to buy a car their car pollutes the environment and also uses gas.

This person uses this saved money buys other needed items from the store (which probley had petroleum used in manufacturing). The store also had to pay a vehicle to get it there and that vehicle probably wasn't fuel efficient.

So what it looks like to me so far is that they are actually compacting the problem of global pollution and depleting oil more rapidly.

Would you all say that living green helps the environment when you consider these things? If so where am I loosing the big picture?

I am an anti-nuke campaigner from way back so don't even bother guessing what side of the fence I sit on... nuclear energy is an amazing but unfortunate waste of time I think we should steer well clear of. Any opinions out there on this?? What would be a better alternative energy source?

What a load of rubbish and I'm seething. Two hours to clean my sons room up tonight. Every light bulb in my house is one of these bloody things. If this is what I'm going to have to go through when one explodes, I'd much rather go back the old ones and to hell with the planet. I cant even use a vacuum cleaner. I'm so upset that I wasted phone calls to various people who couldnt help. Finally onto someone who looks after the standards for electricity. What if some of that glass had pentrated my sons skin when it exploded. Nobody seemed too concerned about it.

I want to calculate the carbon footprint for my home's electrical energy usage. Is there credible site that offers this capability in US tons? Everything I've found so far is UK based and offers results (I assume) according to their air pollution restrictions and in metric tonnes.

I am getting conflicting information when I search for answers.

Some people claim that the act of unplugging and then plugging in again later uses more energy then just leaving a device plugged in.

Others claim that unplugging devices (computer, microwave etc) when not in use for several hours at a time, saves energy.

Does anyone really know which one is correct? Will I see a reduction on my electric bill if I unplug my microwave, computer etc. when not in use and overnight?

I know this ? might sound completely silly, but I'm completely serious...

Is it more eco-friendly to have short hair?

I mean, you use less shampoo, which means you have to buy them less often, so you use less plastic. And, when you blow-dry your hair, although I rarely do, unless I have to, it takes a shorter time, you use less energy.

Cause I was thinking about cutting my hair shorter, right now it is below my shoulder blades.

No intelligent person would condone that we just bury our raw sewage or dump it into the rivers and lakes. Why bury trash and pretend it goes away?

I rarely use styrofoam but on the rare occasion that I use it I find myself wondering what to do with it. It has the recycle triangle thingy on it but alot of people have told me it isn't recyclable. Also, how do I sort it? Paper or plastic? thanx.

I have to do an assignment on how my school can conserve energy. I'll need to do a table, divided into two parts: what I know, and what I need to know. Ideas in mind are:
- Installing a half-flush button on toilets
- Using solar energy
- Use a system whereby at a certain point in time, e.g. recess, a "sleep" feature in fans and lights will be activated
What will I need to know about these, as I need to do the table? Please help! And more ways to conserve will also be helpful.

Is it better to leave your AC on all day at a higher temp ( I have a small animal in the home) or is it better to turn it on and off as needed. I have heard the amount of electricity to start an AC is worse than maintaining it. Anyone know for sure?
