Basically CONVENTIONAL ENERGIES like thermal power, hydro power, nuclear power and likes are generated for the basic consumption needs in any country…
However, NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGIES like solar power, wind mills, tidal power generation (under development) and likes are also pressed in service in order to exploit the natural / national resources to the maximum…

Renewable (and Non-conventional) sources like Water,Wind and Solar Energy are better than Non-Renewable (which have been used conventionally ) Petroleum ,Natural Gas or Coal . This is because World is likely to run out of Petroleum and Coal reseves within next 100-150 years or even earlier .

Nuclear is the only alternative source that has proved to be affordable and reliable, and can provide the amount we need.

Solar is very good for some specific use, but is very expensive and requires very large areas to provide much power. For example, it would take more area that most houses have to provide enough power for an avg. house, and still is not reliable in most areas because of cloudy days.

Wind is great for some areas that have a lot of wind and Hugh areas to place wind generators. They require very large open areas and do a lot of damage due to construction. Still not always reliable because the wind does not blow all the time.

Hydro is great, but not practical in most areas. It also has an enormous environmental impact.

Undoubtedly non conventional.Solar energy beats all other sources as it's non exhaustive,no input cost ,available for the most part of a year, extremely low maintenance cost and zero pollution. For the coming decades,it has to be a judicious mix of all forms of energy to suit local conditions.
