The latest one was in Japan.
The worst in the world was Chernobyl in Russia 1986
The worst in the USA was Three Mile Island
The worst in UK was Windscale, England
The worst in Canada was Chalk River
The most stupid award goes to Chernobyl.
The second most stupid goes to Windscale because they also messed with a breeder type of reactor.
The most incompetent award goes to General Electric for their boiling water reactors at Peach Bottom.

Chernobyl would qualify as a disaster, but it was reall just a fire in a nuclear power plant. A large amount of radiation was released, however, and a number of first responders died as a result of radiation exposure.

Three Mile Island was just an incident. Very little radiation was released and no one was killed or hurt.

There are a number of other incidents at nuclear power power plants around the world. Most are trivial.

I don't, at all. I mean, how people can still see it as an option after what happened in Chernobyl? We don't need a big disaster to be victims of radioactivity again: La Hague, Normandy, France — Radioactive waste from a storage facility in Normandy, France is leaking into groundwater and is being used by local farmers for their dairy cattle, according to a report published today by French laboratory ACRO (1). Water contamination from the CSM waste disposal facility migrates from the dumpsite into the underground aquifers used by farmers, where levels of radioactivity are on average 750 Bequerels per litre, over seven times the European safety limit of 100Bq/l. In agricultural land close to the dumpsite levels in the underground aquifer averaged 9000 Bq/l or 90 times above the safety limit during 2005.

Chernobyl is by far the worst nuclear accident and the only one to qualify as a disaster. It killed a number of people and made thousands more sick. It permanently contaminated many miles of land and a large town which had to be abandoned.

The second biggest accident is probably three mile island, but that does not qualify as a disaster. No people were killed, no land or towns had to be abandoned.

Chernobyl, and more recently after an earthquake in Japan, some radiation spilled off into the surrounding area. No where near as bad as Chernobyl though.

I know people that were at Three Mile Island, they had to walk away from their homes (no one would buy them). I had a family that lived with us from Bulgaria. The fallout that was blown by the wind to their town from Cherinoble was causing birth defects generations later. Their little 4 year old boy had one leg 8" shorter thant the other and no forarm. He had one finger and thumb on his elbow. I will let you make your own conclusions.

how about all those disasters waiting to happen? run a search for "superfund sites" and you will see a map of the U.S. with all the sites that have not been cleaned up. Many of these are radioactive storage sites, and many others are just "contaminated" sites...whatever that means. I am a New Jersey native, and we have SO DAMN MANY it's rediculous. In fact NJ is a small state but we have the most superfund sites. We are the armpit of the northeast!
