The numeric codes that you see on many plastic items are used to help sort post-consumer plastics for recycling purposes. Different types of plastics are sometimes referred to as “resins” and the numeric symbols are known as “Resin ID Codes.” Each number (1 through 6) signifies a specific type of plastic and usually appears inside a small triangle (often formed by three adjoining arrows) imprinted on the bottom of a plastic item. The number “7” is used to represent a group of other plastics or combinations of plastics. Resin ID codes are not intended to provide guidance on the safe or appropriate use of any plastic item and should not be used for this purpose.

As far as burning plastic, it can and should be recycled. If you burn plastic expect a nasty fume and release of chemicals, but under no terms should you be burning plastic. if you have curb side recycling they local waste company should take it all.

Here in the Tri-City area Patriot Disposal is a great for their recycle service. They provide a container that is as big as my trash container, and they take plastics 1-7. You can find that number inside of the recycle symbol that is usually located on the bottom of the product.
It probably is true that if you burn plastic it is bad, but when you recycle plastic you don't burn it you melt it down. If you have some questions on recycling give Patriot a call they were really good about the questions I had. 928-775-9000 is their number.

the recycly sign (the three arrows in a triangle shape) is just a general symbol on all plastics- the number in the middle signifies which polymer the certain bottle is made of. for example the if a bottle has a recycle symbol with a number one in the middle the bottle is made of the polymer polyethylene. polymers are just different types of plastic. most plastics can actually be recycled into different things like outdoor furniture etc. burning plastics releases dioxins which can cause cancer and are bad for the ozone layer- this can be prevented by using more natural products and recycling as much as possible

The number in the middle of the recycle symbol is how many times it has been recycled already.

They can only be recyled so many times.

Check it out, here's where I found out. A little dated, but probably still relevant.
