Kids do understand because the are living in a time when the subject is openly and rationally discussed unlike in the 60's 70's and even 80's. As for How do we make sure we control pollution so that we don't have to wear oxygen masks one day? If we follow the advice that is being given on avoiding global warming we may see the day when we have replanted enough trees, Reduced our overall consumption of energy and or worlds resources and set in place a population strategy that enhances the other changes. We just have to get that through to the environmental Neanderthals like Bush and Howard who have no idea.

We're not going to run out of Oxygen and we'll have warmed the planet up enough that even Steven Milloy will admit global warming is happening before we have to worry about CO2 toxicity.

Local pollution might be a problem but that has actually been getting better lately (although we still have a long way to go and aren't at the oxygen mask stage yet though in some highly polluted places you probably want a mask on anyway).

To control pollution we have to *control* it -- pass more laws and international agreements, hire more inspectors, and altogether outlaw certain high-polluting technologies or industries which offer no tangible benefit. We also have to greatly reduce our consumption, and shift our consumption to reduce our ecological footprint.

In a larger picture, it would be a great move to shift the economy from the flawed model of unlimited growth to one of sustainability. But I don't know how you'd convince those in power to give it up.
