I do not drive nor do I own a vehicle. I am a native resident of NYC and never had the need. Recently, I see a trend developing of people giving up their cars and using public transportation. For those that have made this choice, what was your reasoning? Was it financial, environmental or something else?

I dont drive as much anymore I only drive on average once every 3 weeks, I was sick of traffic jams, and being stuck in traffic for 2 hours and then finding out, some guy in a mercedes got a scratch on his car and called a tow-truck, and closed the highway, and after waiting all that time, but fuel tank became empty, so now I walk, ride a bike, or Stick to the mass transit trend. So it was an act to cut costs on gas, save time, and avoid the inconvenience.

I have given up driving to work. I typically ride my bike the 2 miles into work or take the bus on days where the weather is not cooperative. I am environmentally conscious and wish that public transportation was more reliable and readily available.

I own a Ford Focus that gets good gas mileage and is easy to squeeze into a parking space. I typically drive longer distances since the cost is much cheaper than buying 2 round trip tickets.

Also, long distance public transportation journeys always run the risk of delays and can be a real inconvenience. If I lived in Boston or NYC, I would not have my car.

Maybe in NYC it has become a trend, but where I live, the trend hasn't started, maybe because it is the suburbs and there isn't much of a public transportation system.
