I'm a 23 yr. old who graduated from college about 12 hours ago. But I've been contemplating teaching English in Japan for a good deal longer than that.

I particularly want to know--is it possible to find a contract that only lasts for 6 to 9 months, rather than an entire year? Although I think I'm capable of teaching for a year, I'm reluctant because my mom is 57 and in currently stable (but unpredictable) health.

Of course, I'm eager to read any and all other bits of information and opinions you can give me on the subject of teaching English in Japan.

Thanks a bunch! ^_^

I am planning to major in education. Was just wondering which teachers are in demand now. I am interested in languages: french/spanish/russian, possibly ESL. What's in demand now? AT middle school/high school level?

I think you guys can help me understand this. I ask this question, because I think it's unjust in forcing high school or college students into taking classes that have no relation towards their career interest. While it's good to know things, why would a student that is interested in becoming a chef, need to understand English Literature?? As humans, we don't need to know virtually everything, do we? So, think of your children. Do they really need to know everything the public schools teach them?

My teacher is..weird. Strange.
I am 15 yrs old and i am quite shy.
anyway, my teacher keeps being really strange with me. I have a locker at school and he opened it a couple of times and goes through my stuff.. e.g i left my school diary in there, and next thing he comes upto me during break and says "I found your diary.".. i was like "Thanks.." but he also hides my stuff. In my school we have 'workbooks' which is a private book which we write down stuff in and the teacher marks it etc.. well anyway it was in my locker.. i realise its gone, i go to his office after searching the whole school and he says "Oh, i left it in the canteen.." so i go there, its lost. I told him today in lesson that it was lost and he said "speak to me after the lesson." I worked on scrap paper thru the lesson. Anyway at the end i spoke to him and he started shouting at me, I ended up crying because he was shouting so loud. Nobody heard him shouting because it was after the lesson when everybody had left..

I'm a teacher it does not help students in the slightest.

It just shows the pure lazyness of some of them!

Teachers aren't dumb we can tell straight away when they haven't done it!

Have a nice christmas!

Since our public schools are teaching students to be atheists, then why should we be surprised when kids start killing each other? This didn't happen until the prevalence of teaching evolution arose. Coincidence? I think not!

I taught elementary school for eight years then I switched to teaching eighth grade English at a new school. I am fully-credentialed, have obtained two masters, have had excellent prior evaluations, and am so happy teaching eighth graders at an inner-city school in Los Angeles. I love teaching these kids. I am very loving, but enforce my rules and make students get their work done. I haven't made any friends at my new job teaching middle school and I eat lunch in my room while helping my students with missing assignments. At my school our students go to the same history, science, math, and English teachers. Two of the teachers today told their classes that their English teacher (me) hasn't taught them enough and is too nice to them and a bad teacher. One of them specifically mentioned my name to their students. These teachers have never been in my classroom personally and this is really affecting me. I try so hard with my students and am very down about going to work. What should I do?

Now that the technology is available, why not address the problem of having teachers isolated in crowded classrooms with the always present unruly students disrupting the learning environment- see how the casino monitors catch all kinds of mischief, & put those skills to work in today's schools? Have enforcers at the ready should actual trouble break out?

I'm trying to get a head start learning Spanish before the new semester starts. I went to the library and took out one of those "easy learn while you drive" language sets which include 4 tape cassettes and a lesson guide. After playing the lessons over and over, I find that I have almost no retention of the language.
Am I doing something wrong or are these sets ineffective?
Any advice will be appreciated.

I'm a teacher. The other day in a meeting the presenter said something to the effect of, "We're not here for the money, we're all here because we care about these kids, you're all caring people." Do people think teaching is a profession you have to be called to, like the ministry or something? I'm having a hard time expressing what I mean but the gist is here. Are there any teachers out there who get what I mean?
