I am planning to major in education. Was just wondering which teachers are in demand now. I am interested in languages: french/spanish/russian, possibly ESL. What's in demand now? AT middle school/high school level?

Math, science, and language arts are the core courses and always needed in CA. Go for it!
And with special ed., you will always have a job.

The most in demands subjects in every state are Sciences and Math. Unfortunately there is not a big demand for language teachers, as it is a big expense for schools and they like to keep staff down, but people are still becoming language majors...so it's all about supply and demand there. Though in CA they do the whole blended Spanish and English class thing, so there you could get away with Spanish.

If you are female, though, Math or Science is most in demand.

There are shortages of math and science teachers everywhere in America, not just in CA. ESL teachers are needed as well, due to the ever increasing immigrant populations. If you live in CA and really like foreign languages, especially spanish, then I would get in touch with school districts close to the Mexican/American border to find out what kinds of services are needed there. I'm certain that if you get an ESL degree, you will find work there.

Math and science.

Think of it this way:

every student needs to take core subjects - thus huge demands for math and science. Only high schoolers take second language courses...and only once or twice in their 4 years. Most high schools have a veteran or two filling those positions. You best bet is math or science, if that doesnt work for you, go english.

I don't know about CA, but I understand that across the country only math and special ed have the slightest chance of employment. We are cutting positions in this state and our school enrollment is in decline. Our state capital had to close one of its two middle schools because there were not enough students. In the years that I worked, any advertised position in humanities had 200-400 applicants in the first few days.
