I teach high school English and I am looking for ways to keep my students engaged. It is an inner-city school, and many of the students struggle with proper English. Most don't want to be in the class at all.

im trying to write a persuasive speech, and i just want to know what a lot of people think about it...

so do you think that holidays should be a part of curriculum (im going to focus on elementary schools)? during the winter holidays would it be appropriate if a teacher taught about different cultures and how they celebrate winter? im not saying to teach the religion, but the kids should be exposed to other cultures, and religion and culture go pretty much hand in hand.....

what do you think?

thanks for your opinion!

I teach 6th grade reading and we're embarking upon an objective unit of winter holidays around the world. We are study 5 other holidays in addition to Christmas. We're looking at the documented history of the holidays, and will then be comparing and contrasting different countries and cultures with our own.

Several students say they are "not allowed" to be in the classroom during this time. I am, therefore, sending them to another classroom (for three weeks!!) while we work on our unit. Rather than give them pointless worksheets, I'd like to learn more about their beliefs. Do JWs take offense at this? What other types of activities are "ok" to ask of JW students?

Has anyone ever used the site A to Z Reading? It's $50 a year but it looks pretty cool. I'm a 3rd grade teacher trying to do guided reading and not only do I need ideas...but I am having alot of trouble finding the time to pull groups. Any suggestions from intermediate teachers out there? We won't really be able to do "centers". I have a 90 minute reading block and 35 minutes of it needs to be silent sustained reading. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi. I am a first-grade teacher and I have a room parent who is always bringing in treats for the kids, buying supplies for our classroom, and helping with crafts. I know she is doing this because she values her daughter's education (and she realizes teacher don't have the funds to buy all this stuff themselves).

Last time she brought in treats, my students expressed a desire to get her a little gift because she is always helping us. I already had them make thank-you cards for her a few months ago. Does anyone have any great ideas of a little thank-you gift we could give her, maybe around Christmas time? (I know this isn't necessary -- I just think it's great that the students want to express their appreciation and I want to encourage that. It's not really appropriate for it to be an expensive gift, as the reason she is buying stuff for the classroom is that she knows I don't have the money to purchase it all. It would be great if the kids could make something.)

I know for sure I want to be a teacher. I love working with kids, and other people, I have been a tutor for many years, and I love the schedule the career offers. (yes I know they don;t get paid much, but I don't care)
My problem is I don't really know what subjects I am passionate about to teach? I do like spanish, but I don't think I'll want to major in Spanish in college, maybe minor. So should I be an elementary school teacher and minor in spanish because I live in CA where there are a lot of hispanics?
advice!!

I am about to finish student teaching in Pennsylvania. I will be certified to teach German in public schools, but I have also thought about applying for jobs in private schools. What are the benefits of teaching in one over the other?
