I totally agree with you.

Personally, I always use correct spelling when typing, and I have a spellchecker add-on for my browser.

But it really doesn't bother me if people use text speak or make some spelling mistakes when writing messages on the internet, it doesn't make them stupid, and it doesn't suggest that they can't spell, they could be a perfect writer for all you know, text speak is used simply to type things more quickly and save time.

I think all the people who go about Yahoo Answers whining about spelling and grammar should get over it.

Its just a quick question posted on the internet, we don't post questions here so people can give us an in-depth analysis of of our spelling and grammar, as long as you can read the question, and in most cases the spelling mistakes aren't hard to figure out, then just answer the actual question or don't bother posting.

All you people who are answering this question, you're going on about how people won't get a job unless they can spell properly, who says they can't? If they're just posting a quick question on Y!A, they probably aren't as worried about their grammar as they would be if they were applying for a job.

Just because somebody uses not-so-perfect spelling and grammar on Y!A, doesn't mean they write like that all the time.

So overall, I say out with the grammar police, stop complaining about perfect spelling and grammar and just answer the question at hand.

EDIT:
And to all those who have given me a thumbs down, go ahead. If you have nothing better to do with your weekend than sit on the internet moaning about perfect grammar and spelling and pointing out everyone's mistakes, oh how I pity you.

It is important, hon. We all make the occasional mistake, we're human...but what you're doing is just plain lazy and careless. That says something about you - whether it's true or not - and people do judge you, professionally and socially, by your communication skills.

Take the following, for example:
Why so many gramma and spelling nazis?its not that important?
I type quick and if i slip up om someting theres one of the spelling nazis going on about kids to day and get an education there is more to live when u r young so answer the questiond not critise it.

Why so many grammar and spelling nazis? It's not that important.

I type quickly, and if I slip up on something, there's a spelling nazi going on about "kids today" and "get an education". There is more to life when you are young - so answer the question, don't criticize it.

Guess what? It actually took me longer to try to figure out what you were trying to say than it did to retype it. That, honestly, is selfish on your part...communication is a means of making yourself understood by others. If you can't do that effectively, you need to learn how, and quick. Trust me, college profs and employers are not going to take kindly to "wut do i do wit dis? huh?"

I have two problems with creative spelling and grammar:
1. In a forum like this, you are talking to people of all ages and from many different countries. If you expect to be understood by those who don't use text talk as their first language, then you need to use more standard spelling and grammar. Quite frankly, I don't usually bother reading questions that I must struggle to understand. I find this type of writing to be disrespectful because you're asking people to spend their precious time deciphering your language mess.
2. After teaching English for 30 years, I've seen students who used various types of shorthand and slang in their writing to the point that the errors began to creep into their academic work. I've even seen students use text talk in their college cover letters and essays. There's an old saying that "Practice makes perfect." Well, from my experience, the opposite is also true. If you constantly write using poor spellings and grammar, it can become habit and create very imperfect results-- like being turned down for jobs, getting bad grades, and not getting into the college of your choice.

As far as people like me being spelling Nazis: Some might say that you are a mass murderer-- of the language.

It IS important now. But when you get older it will be especially important. I make mistakes when typing as well and maybe I dont proof something as closely as I should. But I think the spelling and grammar nazis are probably talking about the people who choose out of shear laziness to use words like "wit" and the like. I would say its one of those practice makes perfect things. I work in a business that requires a degree of professionalism. And when I receive an application that is barely legible and most of the words are misspelled that application goes to the bottom of the pile. There is no excuse for THAT.

So do yourself a favor--ignore the nazis but dont neglect your grammar and spelling--it really is important!

Don't you don't think expressing your ideas clearly is important? If you were typing your resume to apply for a job, would you do it quickly and make errors or take your time and type it correctly? Because your resume gives the first impression of you to an employer, you would obviously take your time and do it correctly. Typing in public areas such as Yahoo Answers also gives people an impression of you. Are you not interested in projecting a positive image of yourself?

Why not just make a little effort to either slow down or learn to type fast with accuracy? I did.

p.s. Try to use a different word instead of "nazis". To some people, that word is offensive and similar to a racial slur. Remember that Yahoo Answers is read by people all over the world.

I make speeling errors all the time (I prob. will here too.) However if you are writing a formal paper, talking, or etc... then you NEED to have proper grammer in order to gain respect in the world. I know that I don't listen to anyone seriously who doesn't care how they sound. And neither do my teachers or anybody with an education. I do agree that people are too harsh on here though. Sometimes if they don't have an answer they will just correct your spelling, then you know that they have no idea what they are talking about and have no answer to your question.

If you didn't have the necessary grammatical and spelling skills in life you would probably not be able to communicate effectively right now over the net. You wouldn't be able to chat, post messages, read, construct meaningful sentences or enjoy a wide variety of literature amongst the arts. You need to understand how vitally important it is to have a good understanding of spelling and grammer as they are your tools for being able to read, write and communicate effectively in everyday life.

Good teachers know how to integrate it meaningfully with learning how to read and write and not teach grammar in isolation.

That's a silly question. Grammar and spelling are important; and if you think that the people on Yahoo! Answers are the only ones who will judge you on it, you're wrong. Wait until you get into the real world - writing skills are important, and while you may think you can spellcheck your way to success, unfortunately, most word processors can't tell the difference between "wear," "where," and "ware," so in those types of situations you're going to be out of luck. The people who can write and spell advance faster than the people who can't. It's not hard to learn, it only requires that you pay attention. So start paying attention.

"I type quick..." Surely you meant to say "quickly." The old saying "Haste makes waste" fits in here. In your haste to "type quick," you are wasting the skill of effective communication. English (proper grammar and spelling included) is the international language of the business world. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to show that you are intelligent enough to correctly communicate your thoughts in an established language. Disregard for proper communication indicates ignorance, laziness, or both. Is that how you want to be perceived?

It is important. You won't get a decent job without good grammar, and spelling, and syntax, skills. Without a good job, you won't get good pay. Without good pay, you won't be able to buy the things you want. Even while young, you won't get good friends, or lovers, if you are too stupid. Britney Spears is stupid. She faked her way through life, for awhile, while she had studio help, and got a lot. Now she is trying to get by on her own, and failing, and so losing everything...even her kids. She can't even lip-synch as well as she used to, so she is really kaput. One good car wreck will finish her. If she survives, she will get sued by someone she cripples, or the family of someone she kills, and then she will have to sell off her houses, cars, etc, to pay her attorney fees, and any settlement. The world is full of millions of Britney like morons who never got studio support, and they are on Welfare, or worse. While your parents pay your way, you think you can get away with stupidity. Once you are on your own, you will learn that stupidity equals poverty...unless you are very, very, lucky. Even then, luck does not last a lifetime.
