I'm a senior at Penn State University, majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. My focus has been on the childhood lifespan and have worked in several childcare agencies, summer camps, and a Head Start pre-school. I know that I'm interested in working with children, but part of me is curious about teaching.

I am debating whether to look into grad school to get a Master's degree in Elementary Ed. or to check our alternative routes in teacher certification. I KNOW that I'm interested in child/school social work, but part of me is very curious about teaching...

Do you know anything about either? What pathway do you reccommend?

I am a first grade teacher. We were in the middle of our science lesson, talking about plants and their parts (the major ones...roots, stem, leaves, flowers, seeds, fruit), when the principal came in an announced that everyone who had not missed a day of school all year would be getting a treat. She had me call off the names of students who had not missed any days...they then left the room with her and shortly came back with popcorn. So them some of my students had popcorn and some did not. I tried to keep going through the lesson, but this distraction threw them off so much that they became unable to focus on the lesson and I lost control of the class. Of course I was then upset and turned the lights off, I asked them to put their heads on their desks for about 3 minutes while a select few who had were still listening helped me do what I call "office work" (putting notes in mail boxes). I then (after I was a bit calmer) explained to them that I was unhappy with them because they

This is just a bit weird. Today in ICT, the teacher (female) was talking to a pupil (female) and suddenly began stroking her hair and running her fingers through it.
Then after the conversation was finished, wandered off. This strikes me as really odd? I dunno.
The pupil wasn't very happy about it, she was polite enough while it happened but afterwards she was a bit scared. Just wandering if you think this is weird?

What does it mean to write with elaboration?
Elaboration...Is it the same as writing down examples? Or, is the an example backing up a mainpoint? Then, what is an elaboration?

My son is in second grade and his teacher stated that he is writing and reading below grade average. She stated that he seems to have gone from Kindergarden to Second grade without learning anything in first. I'm a single parent and I cannot afford a tutoring service like Sylvan, is there something I can do better?

im almost 27 years old and im a math teacher for my high school and i am also the dance coach. however, i used to be a model for victorias secret [not the underwear, just thier clothing line] / dancer before i got into teaching. i think im a good teacher, my students respect me and like me [ive been voted best teacher] and i think thats because i understand them and dont treat them like children. anyway, i heard one of the other teachers talking about me, saying that i was a distraction to the students and to certain 'male teachers'. can the school fire me for being 'too pretty'?? my students do excellent in my class, and i cnat really control how i look or how they act. and as for the 'male teachers'....well what can you do?? im already in a good relationship with one of the other math teachers. so should i be intimidated?

I don't get it. I teach second grade. My students could care less about the objectives. They don't even pay attention to the board.

I have lesson plans open on my desk, so I don't use the board either. Yet I am required to have them up. Why?

Recently I went on a 10 day trip with school and this one teacher was always comforting me when I was sick or homesick.

One day after lunch I felt like I was going to spew up all my lunch and went to find a teacher to ask if I could sit at the front of the bus (we had to travel to the next town we were goin too)in case I was sick. I found a teacher and it just happened to be the nicest teacher on the trip and my favourite. I asked her and she said yes. Then she asked why? I just started crying because I felt so sick and usually it was my mother who comforts me when I am sick. She gave me a cuddle and comforted me.

It was 2 days before we went home and the same teacher walked into my room and told us it was lights out. When she walked in I was on the phone to my parents balling my eyes out. She then sat with me for about 10 minutes comforting and cuddling me. The same thing happened the next night. She had also seen me crying because I was homesick on about the third day but she..

I am a first year second grade teacher and I often get tips and tricks from the seasoned teachers.

One of them told me that she looks at the chapter test questions. Then she teaches the kids ONLY the information that is going to be on the test. She said that it overwhelms them if you try to teach EVERYTHING in the chapter.

I mentioned this to my mentor and she said the teacher is wrong and I need to report her to the principal. What do you think?
