As a past teacher and now stay at home mom, I am infuriated when I see obvoius examples of kids asking others to do thier homework. I'm not talking about one or two things they need for homework help, but the whole thing. How do you feel about it and how do you try to prevent it in your classrooms?

I'm a first-year teacher with a very rambunctious group of sophomores in a Geometry class. I've been trying to think of a good project for them to do. Something hands-on would be good. They already did tesselations (a staple of every high school geometry class) and really worked hard on them and did a good job. I'd like to do two projects per semester, but can't think of another good one. If it helps, we're working on proofs and midsegments of triangles right now - but the project doesn't have to be directly related to that.
Any ideas for something I could assign to these kids would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I know most people will say it's becuase the kids don't care, the usual line.
BUT, I read all the time about other reasons for this.
1) schools do not want to help kids thru special ed, so they tell the teachers not to tell the parent that the child has problems.
2) There are too many kids in class for teacher to be able to teach them all and make sure they KNOW how to do these things.
3) NCLB mandates teachers to teach specific things at specific times. THey have to fly thru the work and stay on a schedule, so if any child does not learn the material, he is LEFT BEHIND.
THis stupid law is causing the very thing it was made for.
4) Some teachers just don't care.

It appalls me that kids go thru 13 yrs of school and dont' even know how to read and write!!!

What are the reasons you can think of?

I am an engineering student and with regards to english subject most of my classmates (say 8 out of 10) often find difficulties in dealing with paragraph composition, knowing the right tenses of verbs, grammar, etc. It is a problem which most of engiering students suffer or worst lead them of having no great interest in passing subjetcs such technical writing, project study and other related subjects that require composition. On the other hand, most of them say it is better to deal with mathematic since the patern is standard and all you need to know is how the operation works. However, most of mathematical problems especially word problems are written in english language,so how come they could still answer such mathematical problems if they find themselves poor in english? If one is good in math, he is not really that bad in english... however it is a scenario that students doing good in mathematics are performing hard in grammar, tenses, vocabularies, or even spellings. WHY?

I am a college student in a relatively liberal city, and through the years I've encountered several teachers who use their position in the classroom as a platform to spew their political beliefs. As a prospective teacher, I've always found this behavior very unprofessional. I am a pretty liberal person, but I just find it so rude (and a little offensive) when my teacher babbles about 9/11 conspiracies and government corruption. See, it's one thing to express your opinion--it's another thing to assert it as the truth and assume others will agree with you.

In another instance, I had a teacher in high school who spent nearly an entire class period ranting about his opposition to gay marriage. To me, that was downright ignorant because there could have been lgbt students in that class who were offended but too afraid to speak up because of his authority.

Is this appropriate behavior in a classroom setting? If so,
where do you draw the line between debate and diatribe?

The personalities in my classroom are all over the place this year. I had been warned previously by other teachers that the students that I was receiving had personality conflicts. That is a mild way to put it.
I have tried some team building activities in my classroom, but they insist on fighting or complaining about each other. The students are 4-5 grade. They really do not see the need to get along and they are creating havoc in the classroom everyday. It is like putting out a million little fires a day.
Is there a way to help the students recognize in a kind way that we are all in this together and the better we work together, the better our year will be.
I don't expect a utopian society, but I would like a little civil behavior. Please help!

I just started student teaching high school pre-algebra. There is one group of kids who work really hard but take a lot longer to do warmups, examples, and assignments so its really hard to move on and assign more work but its hard for the other kids to sit there with nothing to do. What to do what to do... Suggestions? PS the kids take longer because its hard for them, NOT because they are goofing off.

I'm a teacher at a language school. Yesterday there was a very important football match between the two most popular teams of my country and the time of the match coincided with our class. There were only 4 students present out of 17, and I dismissed the class because according to the rules of the institute more than one-third of the students must be present for that class to be held. half an hour later a student's mom called the institute saying why I dismissed the class, I had no right to do so, she said those who were ansent were at fault and I shoul've continued the class,I'm being paid for it and she talked my butt off. What do you think? Did I do the right thing to dismiss the class or not? It's a starter-level class and I had no other choice.

Is this wrong?
My brother junior high Math school teacher named Ms. Armstrong calls out all the student final grade for each marking period and their midterm and final exam grade in front of the whole class. She claims she do this to motivate students to do better. Is this right ethically?

I'm planning on becoming a junior/high school teacher eventually, and I'd like to know what students think makes a good teacher. I don't mean "No Homework" or "Gives all A's." What makes you guys like your teachers and respect them at the same time?
