I am signing up for a class next semester (required) where I heard the professor grades using a "pure bell curve". This means that the grading distribution is already set at the BEGINNING of the course.

However, this worries me. Because a pure bell curve means that it's not impossible, albeit rather unlikely, that if everyone does "A work", and I end up doing "B+ work", I could fail the course--that is, if my understanding of said system is correct.

In the event of such a case, are there alternatives? In other words, if the system turns out to be an "unfair" grading system due to the aforementioned hypothetical case, are there measures put in place to protect the interests of students? By the way, I attend a Florida public university.

Thank you for your time.

or disability benefit is calculated if you receive a pension from work where Social Security taxes were not taken out of your pay. A modified formula is used to calculate your benefit amount, resulting in a lower Social Security benefit than you otherwise would receive. (http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10045.html)
How is a teacher's retirement considered a windfall when the State takes 1/3 of your wages while you are working and then gives you back that 1/3 as your retirement. Especially when you start teaching late in life, is it fair to reduce your social security benefits 60% even though you paid into social security over 20 years, and even though you still pay into social security when you have to work at Wal-Mart to pay your bills after you retire from teaching???? What kind of a "windfall" is that???? IF YOU ARE THINKING OF SERVING YOUR FELLOW MAN AS A TEACHER, be advised that there will be no reward, sympathy, or respect for doing so once you turn 50! I have a student who wants to come in early in the morning for tutoring, but he has an A in my class. I talked with him about it on Friday and I explained that he doesn't need tutoring, but he said he wants an A+.

I told him that he really doesn't need the extra help to get an A+, but that he just needs to keep working hard and studying and he'll be fine.

What would you do? Would you go in early to help an A student get an A+?

I'm in 9th grade and i think our vote for colors on or program was unfair. I would of thought she would put colors that everybody likes on their and not leave people out. I thought all the ideas i had was left out or stupid for them. Our colors are black and red and i absolutely hate it. Wearing black stuff for me is like being dirty and red is the color of blood... The colors to me represent a gang or killer. What do you guys think? was it fair or not?

I'm a first year second grade teacher. I did not major in education, rather I took a certification program for career changers, so I'm learning as I go.

I find it really annoying that the parent of one of my TAG students just pops in whenever he feels like it. It's not excessive, but I feel like I have to be on my toes because you never know when he's going to just show up.

He signs in at the office first, then he just opens the door and comes in and sits down. He walks around the back of the room looking at stuff, then he goes back to watching.

WTF? I'm already nervous and learning a job as I go. :-(

Ok so christmas is coming up and I have four great teachers I want to make presents for? My mum is mega crafty so ever since pre-school it's been kinda tradition to make my teachers a present like a christmas ornament. One year I made this teacher who loved earrings a pair of earrings and she wore them to graduation! Does anyone have any ideas for homemade gifts for teachers? Just for your info I am giving gifts to 4 teachers and I am in highschool.

Also for any teachers out there, when a student writes a card and gets all mushy saying how they think you're the best teacher ever and stuff do you get uncomfertable and creeped out? Or do you find it sweet? I never know how much to write on a teachers card. Should it be kept to a simple "Merry Christmas" or can I tell these teachers how much I love their lessons and how great I think they are and get a little more personal/mushier?

Thankyou, any help would be appreciated.

Knowing that there is a curriculum to follow, and all teachers have to address all the skills and content the kids need to know for that year, do you think all teachers in the same grade level need to give the exact same homework, tests, projects, spelling words, etc.? Do you think the end result should be the same but how it's done should be left to each individual teacher?

I contacted a guy to find out about working in his state( i have duel cert in el.ed and special ed. He had me go to his state and then told me he had no jobs and did not even give me an interview, he said that he was retiring in 14 months and since i was having trouble getting my license, ohio requires a different numbered praxis test, even tho the state is recipricle) just keep him advised if i hear anything. you see i am 50 and maybe that did it. He made it seem if i came there he would move the powers that be to help me. here is my question-should i stop trying to get certified in that state and just stay here in pennsylvania or should i tell him if he gives me temporary certification that i will even take the latest version of praxis? What should i do?

I am a student teacher and one of the classes I'm teaching is high school pre-algebra. These kids and way behind in their credits and half will go to continuation school and half to special ed and right now they're stuck in HS pre-algebra. They are the hardest kids to work with at the school and refuse to do work. I've been nice so far and they have walked all over me (other kids have told me this too). The original teacher and my advisor said that monday its time to crack down and lay down the law!! I'm so NERVOUS!! My teacher gave me referral forms and suggested I send someone to the office!! I'm speechless at what to say to the class on monday!! Any suggestions on how to start!!

For example, in El Salvador kids usually begin learning Algebra 1 in the 4th or 5th grade while kids here in America usually start learning it in 9th grade and some even fail it and have to retake it in 10th grade. In summer 2008 I am moving to El Salvador to complete the 12th grade and I am so worried the kids in El Salvador are so far ahead from the ones here in the USA. The only advantage I probably have over them is my English nothing else. Why is it that american education is so bad? Are the kids to blame who usually join social cliques like rocker, prep, ghetto, emo etc. or are the teachers to blame who some don't teach at all and are more worry about getting a raise. or is it the American Education Curriculum?
