I am very concerned about students in school today. After reading a question on Yahoo Answers, I was wondering how many of you out there have been touched by a teacher inappropriately?

What did you do?

hello. i'm a 6th grade teacher and the regular reading curriculum i am supposed to follow only has my kids reading one story in a basal reader per week.

i work in an inner city school without a library, so i'm working an extra job to earn money to buy some class sets of books from scholastic (where they are cheap and i can earn extra points towards free books).

i'm aiming to teach one novel per month (on average), and i'm wondering if these is a good timeline, or if i will need two months. i know it is different for everyone, but i would like to know what other teachers out there do.

also, do you have any great ideas for novels in the classroom that works for you? (i.e., using post-its, extended activities, etc.)

what works in your classroom?

Graduated college BA in art but want to become a school teacher, what is the first step?
I am guessing I need to go back to school and get another BA but have no idea what.
I know I want to teach around grade 2 and up, The higher the better since I want to do more of a mentoring/teaching and less babysitting.

I'm not sure if anyone has thought of this before, but in my opinion I believe it really isn't fair that evolution is taught in schools but creation isn't. They say that they won't teach creation in schools because they don't want to offend anyone. The problem is that they are offending christians by teaching evolution in schools. If they really don't want to offend anybody then why don't they either teach both in schools or not teach either of them. If they teach both at school then it would give everybody all the info they need to know and give them the chance to choose what they want to believe. Or if they didn't even teach either of them in schools then it would not offend anyone and it could give everyone a chance to choose outside of school from friends, family, and can choose with their own opinion. So just out of curiosity what is your opinion on this subject. I am not trying to start any big arguments, but I'm just wanting to know everybody's opinion, whether you agree or not.

I was talking to a lady about becoming a teacher (I'm 29, and haven't had a good career out of the film/tv industry I was looking to do) in Chicago and she mentioned that you have to be able to do more than one field, even if it's not your field (English teachers doing Math, Math teachers doing English).

Is this true?

My son's gr.K teacher makes them pray before eating. I thought you weren't allowed to do that in public school? I am not relgious and I don't want my kids to be taught relgion. If I wanted my kids to learn about all that I would send them to a relgious school!

We've lost the Christmas party to "holiday party" and Easter party to "spring party." The kids are not allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school any more and now there's a new "NO sweet treat" rule. Parents are not allowed to bring anything sweet (cupcakes, birthday cake, brownies, etc) for their birthdays or any other class party. We are only allowed to bring in things like cheese squares, veggies and fruit. The principal said that anything brought in "against her policies" will be confiscated. (Like it's contraband or something.)

I'm all for having healthy kids however I think telling a kid that he has to bring in carrot sticks as a party snack for his birthday is rediculous. The other problem that this is creating is poor self image in these kids. At a birthday party, the kid next door said, "I can't have cake and ice cream, it's not healthy and I don't want to get fat." This is a SIX year old that said this who is NOT fat. This is not an isolated case.

Can she do this?

Teachers... I am often absent from school. I have migraines that do not respond to medication, and they incapacitate me for the day. I always have work to make up when I get back to school the next day. How do you recommend making up work? I always get overwhelmed with double the amount of work (even more, because I have to make up classwork also). When I get overwhelmed like this, I tend to just blow through the material without really understanding it, because I am worried about it all being due the next day. Any suggestions to make this process a little easier?
