I am not accusing, I am just asking. It is my opinion that a few (minority) teachers do not want to deal with children that may be a challenge and just want to medicate them into submission.

I really agree with Kim that it may be food related and that before prescribing medications, they should work on the diet.

I really appreicate all of the viewpoints. I really was not trying to blame the teachers; I know that parents are equally to blame. I certainly appreciate teachers and what they have to put up with.

Yes and No.
Unfortunately ADD and ADHD is a check list. 1/3 of students diagnosed with ADD or ADHD actually have ADP (auditory processing disorder). 1/3 diagnosed end up have bi-polar disorder.
I think that children can have these disorders, however I do blame the lack of focus and attention that is seen across the board in children on poor diet (foods loaded with sugar and crap; processed food) and on TV/video games. Kids are watching up to 3 or 4 hours a day of TV/video games. Those things effect the focus and attention of children.
In addition, parents don't spend enough quality time with their children. Both parents are often working 40+ hours a week, this takes a toll on kids.
Also, we are placing higher demands academically on children than we were 10 or 15 years ago. Some children are not mature enough to sit in a chair in first grade for 25-40 minutes for a lesson.

I'm a teacher and I hate seeing how suddenly ALL these kids have add or adhd. Some honestly do, but it is WAY over-diagnosed. I would NEVER use that as an excuse...I think that students do, and I think that doctors do too. They get more money and so do the makers of Ritalin the more it is "diagnosed".

I think some do. But I also know many (like myself) that find very few students have ADHD or ADD. I think many parents also do this.

Children, especially young ones, are not meant to sit still for more than 15-20 minutes. Its basic child development.

Maybe some do but I have had lots of kids who just bounce off the walls- and parents too! I have had kids I was told were ADHD and just needed a different environment- so it just depends on the individual.

No, I think parents and students do.

It is a diagnosis, not an excuse.

ADHD is a genuine learning disability. Please don't spread your hatred and misinformation here.
