The personalities in my classroom are all over the place this year. I had been warned previously by other teachers that the students that I was receiving had personality conflicts. That is a mild way to put it.
I have tried some team building activities in my classroom, but they insist on fighting or complaining about each other. The students are 4-5 grade. They really do not see the need to get along and they are creating havoc in the classroom everyday. It is like putting out a million little fires a day.
Is there a way to help the students recognize in a kind way that we are all in this together and the better we work together, the better our year will be.
I don't expect a utopian society, but I would like a little civil behavior. Please help!

The students already where uniforms so this is not an issue.
I don't think it is that they don't think that I am a strong leader, they just don't like each other and they have conflicts in whatever they are doing whether they are "having fun" or not.

I think be stern and understand that when they enter the classroom, they become alike and they leave their differences, as well as their erratic behavior outside.

Especially in the age range you've mentioned. Your being strong with them is the key, and I don't know if they teach this in teachers' college.

Putting it another way, they need to sense your stength more than an effort to create "harmony." They will test you.

This could very well be a strong argument for school uniforms, which could facilitate an attitude adjustment.

I also happen to agree with the post directly below.

You have to make it fun, interesting and teamwork that takes them outside of the classroom. Excursions are a huge help.
But you need to set class rules, and there needs to be some sort of punishment that makes them hate getting into trouble. Also talk to their parents about their behavior.

Do a small activity. Ask them to nominate a leader among themselves for helping you in the activities ahead. Then categorise various activities and ask them to nominate a leader for each activity among themselves. Now, tell them that all personal and proffessional proble,s must be handled by their leaders. Now, when you put responsibility back on them, they tend to become serious about themselves.
