I'm a teacher at a language school. Yesterday there was a very important football match between the two most popular teams of my country and the time of the match coincided with our class. There were only 4 students present out of 17, and I dismissed the class because according to the rules of the institute more than one-third of the students must be present for that class to be held. half an hour later a student's mom called the institute saying why I dismissed the class, I had no right to do so, she said those who were ansent were at fault and I shoul've continued the class,I'm being paid for it and she talked my butt off. What do you think? Did I do the right thing to dismiss the class or not? It's a starter-level class and I had no other choice.

Before i dismissed the class I talked to the principal, and I was told to wait for some more minutes, in case no one else showed up then I could send them home, and I did so. Of course I could have done something like doing some lousy exersices or other things but It would've been so boring. I couldn't have done anything else for one hour and forty-five minutes. How many exercices could I've done?

For the students that showed up- give them extra credit or assign class homework for the entire class who did not,or have a test the next class, you obviously know who your real students are. You can't go back, but you need to instill the fact that your class is just as, if not more important than a game. By releasing the remaining students it seems as though you are powerless and this could very easily happen again. Next time something is scheduled like this- plan a party instead of class- reward the ones who do show. I think you did do the right thing- you were following rules, however, to avoid this there should be some reprocutions.

well u did the right thing as per the rules of your institute... but if students were ready to attend the class then u should have given some outlines of what u r going to teach in the next class...

"According to the rules of the institute", you did the right thing. Yes, what else could you do? This student's mom didn't like it, but I doubt you made the rule. I presume you directed her higher up the ladder toward the people more deserving of her ire?

Just tell the mother what the rule you followed was. Tell her it was out of your control and you were told by the principal to follow procedure.

" I had no other choice" You answered the question yourself. The rules wee followed. You spoke to eh Principal. I would have referred the mother to the Principal and said that it was his decision.

Well everyone should follow the rules and wat u did is perfect...
Alternatively, its always advisable that the Priciapal of the school is informed, so tat in future the same scenario occurs, u can be proactive and schedule the class later :)

I was a teacher myself too. It would've been better if you left some exercises or projects for those who are present and give some extra incentives. Well, it happened already right? Just prepare yourself with further investigation from the institution.
